Masters Programme

International Mathematics Education

Overview

The University of Bremen offers a masters programme in International Mathematics Education, which combines foci in mathematics, education and international issues with a tight integration of theory with practice.

Key aspects of mathematics education in international contexts are addressed, including: international mathematics curricula, mathematics education research; proof, reasoning and argumentation; problem solving and problem based teaching; mathematical modelling; assessment; technology; and global issues.

The programme is taught in English, through both on campus and online offerings. These allow both intensive face-to-face experiences in which participants can share their perspectives and experiences and engage reflectively with current research in mathematics education, and opportunities to immediately apply ideas from current research to practice, through action research in the participants’ classrooms.

Through the programme, participating teachers develop competencies including:

  • Awareness of issues in international mathematics education in the areas of curriculum, teaching and learning, assessment and professional development.
  • The ability to link current research in international contexts with mathematics teaching as it is practised.
  • The ability to develop, design, analyse, interpret and report on research in mathematics education and to apply that research to practice.

The programme is open to experienced international school teachers at all levels from pre- school to upper secondary. It is intended to be taken on a part time basis while the participants continue their professional work as teachers. About 20 applicants will be admitted annually.
