Developed by the Council of Europe, the European Language Portfolio (ELP) has rapidly become an influential instrument in language teaching and learning practice in Europe, as it can foster the development of learner autonomy, intercultural awareness and mulitilingualism. The seminar offers an insight into the language education policy that underpins the ELP and its key concepts. Participants of the seminar will gain first hand experience working with a similar portfolio: the European Portfolio for Student Teachers of Languages (EPOSTL), which is a document intended for students undergoing teacher education that encourages critical reflection on the didactic knowledge and skills necessary to teach languages. Upon completion of the seminar the students should be able to:
describe the structure and elements of the ELP
discuss various ways of planning, implementing and evaluating ELP projects
evaluate existing ELP activities and tasks
develop new classroom activities and materials based on the ELP
analyze data from case studies reporting on the use of the ELP
critically assess the advantages and disadvantages of the ELP for German classrooms
critically assess their own experience with the EPOSTL

We will also investigate the process of test development, its implications for test results and their effects on the learning process. Upon completion of the course students should be able to:
discuss different types of test and assessment
critically assess the quality of examples of existing tests
discuss testing and assessment in the context of communicative competence and different skills
discuss the development and quality of various test items
explain the notions of test validity, reliability, objectivity and feasibility in the context of classroom activities
explain and critically discuss the notion of washback

This course has a closer look at how first and second languages are learned in order for future English Language Teachers to evaluate the effectiveness of their own language teaching. We will deal with the following questions:
In which way has English Language Teaching developed in history?
How do children acquire a first language?
To what extent can theories of first language acquisition be applied to second language learning?
Can individual learner characteristics affect success in second language learning?
How do learners learn a foreign language at school - and what are the consequences for teaching them?

CLIL Classes and Modules: Teaching Social Sciences (not only) in English [FBW]

Seminar

Termine:
wöchentlich Di 10:15 - 11:45 SFG 2040

Please note that this course is NOT part of the 'Zusatzqualifikation Bilinguales Lehren und Lernen'.

Social sciences such as history, political science or geography are the most common subjects taught 'bilingually', i.e. in CLIL-classrooms. Obviously in this case the methodology of the specific subject as well as EFL teaching methods have a strong impact on CLIL.

In this course we will both reflect the relationship between the subject and the language theoretically and practically through lesson and exam design and micro teaching.

Please note that this course is mainly appropriate for students studying English and a social science (such as history, political science, geography).

Competences and Errors [FBW]

Seminar

Termine:
wöchentlich Di 16:15 - 17:45 GW1 B0080

Anmeldung über Stud.IP bis 01.03.

Language errors are an inseparable part of the language learning process. Although most foreign language learners are familiar with them, the nature of errors is quite complex and rather poorly understood. A number of fundamental questions concerning errors still cannot be answered with certainty: What makes a language utterance an error? How many types of errors can second language speakers make? What makes an error trivial? Why do statements like "As you know lives my aunt on a farm" or "Waiter, I want two beers" seem more incorrect to some language users than to others? What errors should be corrected? How should we correct errors without over/underemphasizing their significance?
These are just some questions we will try to answer in class.
The seminar offers a thorough investigation of various aspects of language errors, focusing on theory as well as practice. Upon completion of this course students will be able to:
Discuss various definitions of language errors as well as issues involved in error identification
Describe and categorize learner competences and errors
Diagnose the causes of specific errors
Assess the gravity of errors taking into consideration modern teaching approaches as well as standards like curricula or CEFR
Discuss the significance of errors, their evaluation and possible feedback methods
Discuss various testing methods
