Research areas

Bremen Marine Ecology - Centre for Research & Education concentrates on the investigation of ecosystem functions, acclimation strategies of marine organisms (ecophysiology), functional diversity in marine systems and trophic interactions, and biogeochemical pathways.

Marine scientists at BreMarE conduct research on burning issues related to global environmental and climate change, such as the biological impacts of ocean acidification and the expansion of oxygen minimum zones in the sea. BreMarE conducts research projects in the Tropics, and temperate and Polar seas, in coastal systems as well as the deep sea, applying state-of-the-art methods in ecophysiology, molecular biology, biochemistry and trace element analysis.

BreMarE coordinates and organizes marine biology and marine chemistry courses at the University of Bremen. Recent research findings are incorporated in these courses. A wide range of current research topics is part of the Bachelor's study program (specialty Marine Biology in the third year).
