M2 Bridge Professorships

Developing New Research Fields Together

Bridge Professorships create new links between the disciplines of the University—and especially between the University and the extra-mural research institutes.

Not infrequently, new scientific developments originate at the interfaces between disciplines. Research inquiries and methods belonging to one subject area are taken up in others, where they are subsequently adapted and developed to suit new requirements: Bridge Professorships support this kind of transfer process. Being expert in more than one field, Bridge Professors enable the University to strengthen interdisciplinary links within its high-profile areas. As “Bridges between the disciplines” of the University, these professorships strengthen the innovative capacity of the University’s high-profile areas: Additional professorships will be created where new scientific developments give rise to requirements for interdisciplinary cooperation.

As “Bridges to the outside”, these professorships strengthen the cooperation between the University and extra-mural research establishments in the high-profile areas. They enable joint research on new topics.

Together with forms of New Governance, Bridge Professorships strengthen the high-profile areas of the University of Bremen. Calls involving the following five Bridge Professorships will be advertised in the high-profile areas (HPA) late 2012/early 2013, to be followed by one more in 2014.
