Evaluation Instruments in FB 11

The quality loop in FB 11 systematically ensures that the quality requirements in all the Faculty’s study programs are met. The findings of quality assurance are fed back through the system and lead to subsequent adaptation and improvement. Our successful quality assurance is achieved i.a. by the following proven measures.

Since 2015, the Faculty has been carrying out decentralized student surveys in all its bachelors’ programs (every 3 years) and M.A. study programs (every 2 years): See the survey plan on the right for dates. The results of these surveys are discussed in the various committees and published on this page.

The Study Center is responsible for conceptualization (in collaboration with the special committees), implementation and evaluation of decentralized student surveys.

The Dean of Faculty 11 together with the academic advisory office and the various student committees organize yearly round table talks in the study programs. The goal is to promote open and constructive exchange among all participants in the study programs.

As a rule, the student committees convene a general assembly of students prior to the round table discussions to draw up a list of problem issues they would like to have discussed.

Should it not be possible to resolve certain matters during the actual talks, these topics are passed on to the respective committees or persons for further discussion and development of remedial measures. These committees/persons are then responsible for reporting back to the Dean of Faculty on the progress made in implementing such measures and whether it might be necessary to hold further talks.

You can find detailed information on the procedures of round table talks in Faculty 11 together with a report template in the right hand column under QM documents (German version of the website). The next round table talks in Faculty 11 will take place on 5 th of december 2018.

Faculty 11 has been successfully applying this QM instrument for a number of years now. Specially trained students visit courses and moderate talks between lecturers and their students. They promote dialog among all participants on key aspects of the respective courses (methods, curriculum, expectations, lecturer’s approach and students’ response etc.). The idea is not to exercise control or compile rankings, but rather to secure the readiness of members of teaching faculty to listen to students’ feedback and accept constructive criticism, and subsequently take this into account in future.

All members of the teaching faculty are able to take advantage of the dialogical evaluation coordinated by the Study Center.

Since 2014, all students in Faculty 11 have been actively encouraged to initiate dialogical evaluation of the teaching in their courses themselves, i.e. to inform lecturers of their wish to participate in open dialog about how the curriculum is dealt with. Contact points in the event of need for additional brokering are the QM officers, the student committees, the Study Dean, and the Study center.

In the period between winter semester 2009/10 till summer semester 2018, FB 11 trained a total of 208 student moderators, who in the same period oversaw 120 dialogical evaluations of lectures, seminars and modules.

In FB 11 it is not mandatory to carry out course evaluation. Notwithstanding, the Faculty is currently developing a questionnaire on teaching evaluation that can be used in all its study programs, as well as recommendations for the individual conceptualization of evaluation tools. Members of the teaching faculty are informed about this option and can receive support from the Study Center.
