Child Care

Kindergartens, Daycare Centres, Nurseries

If you come to Germany with small children we recommend you inform yourself as early as possible about child care facilities. As spots may be limited for your child this should be researched before your arrival.

Children three to six years old have the possibility to enroll in Kindergarten. Normally the children attend in the morning from 8:00 to 12:00 and lunch is not included. If you are looking for child care for the whole day, you will need a "Tagesstättenplatz“. This option includes lunch and is for children from three to school age.

Children under three go to a nursery, and you can choose care for the whole day and lunch. Spots in Bremen are very limited, so start your search early if you want your child in a nursery.

Costs can vary greatly depending on child care options (such as children under three or having lunch included). In public institutions, prices also differ depending on the income of the parents.

Private Childcare

Private childcare ("Tagesmütter") offer care on an individual and flexible level. Normally these "Tagesmütter" are responsible for multiple children and the facilities are run out of their homes. They must go through training and recieve a certificate from Child Care Services to run the private childcare. You can find them through the newspaper classifieds or Child Care Services. Babysitters, who work for an evening or a few hours on a flexible basis, are usually found through word of mouth.
