On December 10, Dr. Cristiano Chiessi, of MARUM/HWK, will give us an insight into his research on climate change:
Topics related to ongoing and future climate change received a lot of attention in the major media outlets during the last decade. Nevertheless, instrumental-based records of climate parameters are relatively short and only rarely extend beyond the beginning of the last century. This fact may hamper the identification of long-term trends in climate parameters. Marine sediments host a wealth of past climatic information that can be readily used to expand the instrumental-based records and provide a baseline to which post-industrial climate can be compared to. Focusing on the western South Atlantic, I will show how marine sediments can serve as records of climatic events that took place in the past and are just waiting to be unraveled.
