German language courses
German language training is not generally necessary to work in Bremen because communication in English is popular.
However for daily life, outside the work atmosphere, you will gain an advantage to have a basic understanding of German. Communication skills in German will be especially useful in shopping, at the ticket counter, official offices, and more.
The Language Centre in Bremen offers courses at different levels for both students and researchers. There is also a Self-Learning Centre and online classes.
Summer Courses
The international summer courses organized by the Language Centre are open to students around the world who want to learn German in Bremen. Lectures, excursions, and visits are attractive offers to compliment your courses at the Centre. Courses last 4 weeks and cater to 3 different levels of competency: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. More information can be found on the website for the Language Centre.
Courses in the Regular Semester
German courses during the semester are organized by the Goethe-Institute for international students and researchers. Students also have access to a media centre with computers and video resources to further language training. Learning objectives are individualized based on the group. To increase your language proficiency you may want to meet with a tandem partner. While improving your fluency in a second language, you are also helping your partner to advance their proficiency in your mother tongue. The Tandem Placement Agency builds contact between potential tandem partners.
