EXIST-Start-Up Grant

EXIST-Start-Up Grant is part of a support program run by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology and co-financed by the European Union Social Fund. The program supports start-up entrepreneurs from universities and extramural research institutions in the implementation of technologically innovative start-up projects holding promise of economic success.

Who is eligible for support?

  • Researchers at public not-for-profit extramural research institutions and universities
  • University graduates and ex-research assistants (up to 5 years after obtaining their degrees or ceasing employment).
  • Students who at the time of submitting applications have completed at least half of the regular study program.
  • Start-up teams comprising max. 3 persons

Teams in which students comprise the majority can only be funded under exceptional circumstances.

Applications via University or extramural research institution.

What can be funded?

Innovative technology-oriented start-up projects in the manufacturing sector.
Innovative knowledge-based services grounded on scientific findings.

What form does funding take?

Grants to cover living expenses:

  • Post-doc start-up entrepreneurs 2,500 euros monthly
  • University graduates 2,000 euros monthly
  • Students 800 euros monthly
  • Child allowance: 100 euros monthly per child
  • Material expenses: up to 10,000 euros for solo start-ups (for teams max. 17,000 euros)
  • Coaching: 5,000 euros

The maximum period of funding is one year. Applications can be submitted at any time.
