The Research Center for Sustainability Studies (artec) was set up in 1989 as a center for research on work and technology. The research unit is made up of professors from several different Faculties who join together in interdisciplinary research on issues of sustainability from social, economic, and ecological perspectives. Scientific consultancy is aimed at promoting sustainable developments in accordant fields of action. More

ISIS stands for Integrated Solutions in Sensorial Structure Engineering. This research unit bundles the University’s competence in the integration of sensors in engineering components with that of several extra-mural research institutes. The work covers all aspects of the topic, from conceptualization, through materials engineering, up to manufacturing processes, data processing, and energy supply. Via fundamental as well as applied research, ISIS advances the technological development of innovative potentials with regard to safety, cost efficiency, lightweight construction and human-machine interaction. The Institute Technology and Education at the University of Bremen has been conducting research in the area of vocational training and education for more than 20 years. Currently employing a staff of 70 persons, it is among the largest independent research establishments in its field worldwide. The work carried out at ITB involves cooperation between experts in the fields of vocational education, engineering, sociology and cultural studies, psychology, economics and occupational science. The UFT perceives its mission in the scale-crossing development of environmentally compatible processes and products as well as in assessing and minimizing their environmental risks. The Center for Social Policy Research (ZeS) carries out research on the causes and effects of social issues. It is the sole interdisciplinary research institute in Germany which addresses all the regulatory areas of social policy and it combines competence in the areas of political science, sociology, economics and health science under one roof. Networked at national as well as international levels and prominent in regional, national, and international research and practice concerning social affairs, the ZeS combines fundamental with applied research. The Center of Cognitive Science (ZKW) is an interdisciplinary research institute comprising researchers from the fields of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Psychology, Computer Science, the engineering sciences and Philosophy. They examine cognitive functions such as perception, memory and behavior. As the manifold cerebral processes that enable us to see, act and remember unfold in interaction on numerous spatial and temporal scales, gaining an understanding of cerebral processes calls for close cooperation across several different areas of research. The ZKW ensures this type of interdisciplinary collaboration. More
