Research workers at the University of Bremen can make use of a quick and uncomplicated procedure to apply for special grants to fund small-scale projects: Doctoral students can receive support for activities that clearly contribute to an added value within the context of their PhD, such as active participation at high-level conferences or summer schools, research sojourns at renowned institutions, additional experiments, language editing and proofreading for publications, interdisciplinary projects or cooperation projects undertaken with international partners. Post-docs and professors can apply for supplementary funding of research projects in order to prepare applications for third-party funding (including EU projects and travel to cooperation partners), to set up conferences in Bremen or to undertake interdisciplinary research, and also for travel to conferences and congresses. As an added incentive for researchers, grants are available in particular for first applications for DFG funding. Beside the Impulse Grants, researchers can apply for application coaching and an additional bonus offer (cf. Funding Line 08).
WHO IS ELIGIBLE? All doctoral students admitted to PhD studies within the past three years, research assistants already in possession of a doctoral degree and professors of the University of Bremen.
WHAT REQUIREMENTS HAVE TO BE MET? In the case of doctoral candidates, the funding should contribute an added value to the PhD project within the context of additional training or networking in the resp. scientific community provided it does not entail prolongation of the initially planned research period. For other applicants, the feasibility and high quality of proposed projects are the determining factors.
WHAT ARE THE CONDITIONS FOR FUNDING Funding is available for activities that can be concluded within a period of one year. In the case of doctoral candidates, the length and nature of the proposed activities must be proportionate to the respective research project. During the course of their research project, PhD candidates may apply twice for grants up to a maximum of € 1,500; other status groups may submit multiple applications up to an amount of € 2,500 for each project. Part-funding is possible in all cases. When resources are limited, preference will be given to: Applications submitted by young researchers (Docs & Post-docs); Applicants who have not been recipients of an Impulse Grant within the current year; Applicants with no connection to projects with third-party funding that are already running and dispose of sufficient funds to finance the proposed project.
The Procedure Applications for Impulse Grants to fund travel expenses may be submitted at any time up to two weeks prior to the commencement of the respective conference or congress.
