Why do we offer Preparation Studies?
We want to help you have a successful start into your studies.
The undergraduate courses at the University of Bremen are offered predominately in German. To follow the lectures and successfully participate in the seminars, an excellent proficiency of German is required (level C1 or higher). To register for regular studies, you must to prove that you have successfully passed a German language exam with at least level C1 (e.g. TestDaF with 16 points overall).
What are Preparation Studies?
The Preparation Studies are a unique offer by the University of Bremen to applicants for undergraduate studies from abroad. While you prepare for the German language exam at a language school in Bremen you may already be enrolled for up to four semesters as a preparation student at the University of Bremen. You obtain the student documents, including student ID, confirmation of registration and semester ticket for free public transport in Bremen and beyond. You will also get access to the facilities of the University of Bremen, e.g. cafeteria, library, and sports facilities.
The Preparation Studies do not offer classes and are not part of your regular studies. As a prep-student you will predominately focus on learning German and on preparing for the language exam, but at the same time you get will acquainted with your university and make new friends.
With our Preparation Studies, you will gear yourself for your studies at one of Germany's best universities, the vibrant center of science in the German Northwest. You will also enjoy the beautiful city of Bremen with its ancient UNESCO world heritage city hall and the wonderful surroundings, inviting for sports, leisure and enjoyment of nature.
How to become a prep-student?
To become a prep-student, you must complete the regular application process for your undergraduate studies via Uni-Assist, even if you still need to learn German. After your application has been confirmed (Bewerberbestätigung), you will be told that to enroll into regular studies, you must first present proof of German language proficiency (level C1, e.g. TestDaF with 16 points). Please note that deadlines for regular studies are strict (July 15 for winter semester, January 15 for summer semester).
To successfully pass your language exam on time, you may book an intensive language course encompassing at least 20 hours per week (lasting approx. 3 months in each semester) at a language school of your choice in Bremen.
We do not accept German language courses that do not fulfill these requirements for enrollment in preparation studies.
By personally submitting the booking receipt from an intensive German course and the Bewerberbestätigung at our registration office SfS-i you can enroll as a preparation student. You must pay the semester contribution. Except for regular studies, there is no deadline to apply for Preparation Studies, but for the ongoing semester you must enroll before the mid-term of that semester. The semester dates are:
• Winter semester October 01 – March 31
• Summer semester April 01 – September 30
