Developed by the Council of Europe, the European Language Portfolio (ELP) has rapidly become an influential instrument in language teaching and learning practice in Europe, as it can foster the development of learner autonomy, intercultural awareness and mulitilingualism. The seminar offers an insight into the language education policy that underpins the ELP and its key concepts. Participants of the seminar will gain first hand experience working with a similar portfolio: the European Portfolio for Student Teachers of Languages (EPOSTL), which is a document intended for students undergoing teacher education that encourages critical reflection on the didactic knowledge and skills necessary to teach languages. Upon completion of the seminar the students should be able to: describe the structure and elements of the ELP discuss various ways of planning, implementing and evaluating ELP projects evaluate existing ELP activities and tasks develop new classroom activities and materials based on the ELP analyze data from case studies reporting on the use of the ELP critically assess the advantages and disadvantages of the ELP for German classrooms critically assess their own experience with the EPOSTL

The seminar provides an opportunity to explore a wide variety of practical and theoretical issues involved in language testing and assessment. During the course of the semester, we will analyze various types of assessment and discuss ways to evaluate different learner competences. We will also investigate the process of test development, its implications for test results and their effects on the learning process. Upon completion of the course students should be able to: discuss different types of test and assessment critically assess the quality of examples of existing tests discuss testing and assessment in the context of communicative competence and different skills discuss the development and quality of various test items explain the notions of test validity, reliability, objectivity and feasibility in the context of classroom activities explain and critically discuss the notion of washback
