Awards for the University of Bremen


  • In the Times Higher Education (THE) Ranking, the University of Bremen came in at place 26 among the wolrd's "100 Under 50" young universites, confirming its position as one of the world's best unter-fifty-year old universites.


  • The University Bremen chalks up another success in the area of gender mainstreaming in academia: Within the frame of the second round of the Female Professor Programme supported by the German Ministry of Education and the Federal Länder it is granted finance to fund several new professorships to be filled by women. 
  • The University of Bremen is the first university in North Germany and the sixth in the whole of Germany to receive the seal of approval from the Deutschen Hochschulverband (DHV) for fair and transparent appointments negotiations.
  • 2013 was a good year for business start-ups supported by the University: According to the Gründungsradar 2014, an analysis of university profiles in the area of supporting start-ups, Bremen is once again listed among the top ten large institutions with more than 15,000 students.
  • The Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung rewarded the winning concept in the competition “Researcher-Alumni-Strategies” 2014 of the Universtiy of Bremen and the Bremen Leibniz Center for Marine Tropical Ecology (ZMT).
  • The University of Bremen and the Würzburg-Schweinfurt University of Applied Sciences are jointly awarded first place in the competition “MINTernational” [MINT = STEM subjects] organized by the Stifterverband [Donors' association for the promotion of science and the humanities in Germany] and the Daimler und Benz-Stiftung.
  • Besides the  EMAS validation the Minister for Environment commended the University for the way it integrates climate protection, sustainable development, and environmental management.


  • The Verein Arbeit und Zukunft presented the University of Bremen with the "Trommel 2013" (Trommel = drum) for the model project "INWi - Inclusion in academia.
  • For ten times in a row, the University of Bremen managed to obtain the so-called EMAS certification and therewith belongs to the small number of German universities and colleges that are officially entitled to call themselves an environmentally friendly institution.
  • The German Research Society (DFG) has once again placed the University of Bremen in the highest category for achieving equal opportunity in research.
  • The Foreign Language Center of the Universities in the Federal State of Bremen (FZHB) was awarded the "European Language Label 2013".


  • In its 2012 Förderatlas [funding atlas] the German Research Foundation (DFG) placed the University at the top of several rankings of German universities.

  • In recognition of its efforts in wellcoming and taking care of its guests from all over the world, the University of Bremen has been awarded the enviable title "Internationale Hochschule 2012" by the German Academic Exchange Office (DAAD) and the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft.

  • In the context of the "Universtiy internationalization audit" (link in German only) conducted by the German Rectos' Conference (HRK), The University was awarded a certificate fot its internationalization activities.

  • The University of Bremen is one of the first eight universities in Germany to be awarded the "Creating Diversity" certificate from the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft.


  • The University of Bremen received the accolade "exemplary" for its convincing overall strategy of  "equal opportunity standards in research".

  • Two cooperatoin projects with Bremen schools, as well as a climate project, were selected as Official Projects 2011/2012 within the context of the United Nations World Decade:
