The University of Bremen has for a long time been known for its policy of showing understanding for people working and studying while at the same time bringing up a family. Gender mainstreaming takes high priority. Since 2007 the University of Bremen has been successfully participating in the audit for a family-oriented university. Needs-oriented solutions and offers of support for members of the University and guests with family commitments are constantly being initiated with the participation of the Director of Administration and Finance, faculty deans, professors, students and employees of the University. The declared aim is to promote reconciliation of family life with studying, working, and researching while bringing up children or caring for family members, developing new perspectives, and breaking down existing barriers.
One of the central measures in this respect is promoting awareness on the part of leaders in research and the University’s administration for accordant action in the area of personnel development. Among the measures already introduced are comprehensive forms of child care, time off during school holidays, play corners in many of the campus buildings, as well as nursing rooms and baby change rooms.
