Prof. Annette Schavan, German Education and Research Minister, announced the introduction of the Deutschlandstipendium on 1st February 2011. The aim of this bill is to provide targeted financial support to talented and committed young people, helping them to successfully complete their academic studies. The stipend of 300 euros a month is funded 50% by the Federal Ministry and 50% by private sponsors, foundations and firms, i.e. the federal government tops up the private contributions of 150 euros per month with an additional 150 euros. In the interests of its students and the future of the State of Bremen, the University of Bremen is taking proactive part in this program.

At a festive ceremony held on 20th November 2012, a total of 110 stipends were presented to students of the University - 72 of them receiving the stipend for the first time. With many sponsors looking on, the lucky grantees received their stipend certificates from University Rector, Prof. Bernd Scholz-Reiter, and the Vice Rectress for Academic Teaching and Learning, Prof. Heidi Schelhowe. Afterwards, there was an opportunity to network and chat over a glass of wine. This is the second year running that the University of Bremen has awarded the stipends.
