Why is the topic important?
A Data Management Plan (DMP) provides a structured framework for managing research data in a scientific project. It documents how research data will be handled during and after the project. This hands-on workshop introduces participants to the fundamentals of creating a Data Management Plan. A DMP is a key requirement for many funding agencies and is an increasingly valuable tool for ensuring data integrity, reproducibility, and long-term accessibility.
Workshop Goal
The workshop is structured in two parts. In the first part, participants will learn the key concepts of DMPs, including their purpose, core components, and best practices in the context of STEM disciplines (Sciences, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and their quantitative data. In the second part, participants will apply this knowledge in a practical session, developing their own DMPs, either for their own dataset or for an example dataset provided during the workshop. The session will follow the DFG guidelines on research data handling in DFG-funded projects.
By the end, attendees will leave with both a solid understanding of DMPs and a tailored DMP draft that they can adapt for future projects.

Target Audience & Prior Knowledge
Everybody who works with research data (qualitative or quantitative) and is interested in data management and/or wants to write a funding proposal which requires a DMP
Beginner workshop: no prior knowledge is needed
Technical Requirements
- Please bring your own dataset, you want to write a DMP about or an example study that is similar to your research, as well as your favourite pen.
- Everybody who wants (or needs) some coffee: please bring your own mug
About the Trainers
Sarah Büker and Nele Fuchs are data scientists for training and consulting at the DSC.
Sarah Büker has a background in marine environmental sciences and ecology. As a data scientist for marine & environmental sciences at the DSC, she supports researchers in all data related questions. She specializes in bioinformatics, scientific programming, and accessible data management and data science.
Nele Fuchs has a background in Philosophy, Material Culture: Textile (CvO University of Oldenburg), and Transcultural Studies (University of Bremen). As a data scientist in the humanities, she supports researchers in the areas of digital humanities, data science methods and AI-systems for qualitative research, and FAIR-compliant qualitative data management. She has a comprehensive expertise in the ethical and moral considerations of computational methodologies within research contexts.
