Thesis Formular

Experience has taught us that a thesis is likely to be successful or even very successful when there is a certain structure to the thesis process from the outset. Hence, we want to turn the thesis process into your thesis experience through stimulating your intellect and engaging you from early on. So if you are thinking about writing your thesis with us, please allow us some instructions that will help with focusing your ideas and enhancing your conceptual knowledge.

We suggest certain empirical and conceptual means to you in order to focus your thesis proposal. First, please engage with our topic of “Digital Health Management” through studying the report on the digital transformation of health care provided by the World Economic Forum (2017). It identifies four areas of digital transformation that matter for health care: (i) smart care; (ii) care anywhere; (iii) empowered care; as well as (iv) intelligent health enterprises. We ask you to situate your proposal within one of them and to articulate the positioning in your proposal.

Second, we suggest a set of conceptual means geared to assist your thinking. Please read Gregor (2006) on different types of theories and be explicit about which of these seem appealing to you in your proposal. If you want to write a purely conceptual thesis, we furthermore ask you to read Leidner (2018) on literature synthesis and theory development as well as Mindel and Mathiassen (2015) on bridging theory and practice through conceptual work.

You may wonder whether you can work with a company for your thesis. Yes, you can. In fact, we strongly encourage students to work with a company provided that scientific neutrality is ensured. If you have a company at hand, please introduce them in your proposal.

Your final proposal has to be structured around:

  • What is the context of the study?
  • What is the (preliminary) research question?
  • What type of knowledge is expected to result?
  • And through what means that knowledge is supposed to be generated (i.e., by what conceptual or empirical means).

Finally, students will have to check a box that they read the literature we ask them to read beforehand.

Preparatory readings:

  • Gregor, S. (2006). The Nature of Theory in Information Systems. MIS Quarterly, 30(3), 611-642. doi:10.2307/25148742 [mandatory]
