Reconstructing the response of Indian Ocean cold-water corals to environmental change
(part of the BMBF-project COWIO – Cold-water corals in the West Indian Ocean)

The Research Faculty MARUM at the University of Bremen, Germany, has the over-arching scientific goal to achieve a better understanding of key processes in the marine environment. The research themes are: Ocean and Climate, Geosphere-Biosphere In-teractions and Seafloor Dynamics.

Applicants are required to have a PhD either in

  • Marine Geosciences / Paleoceanography / Cold-water coral research

or a related field. This project will build on the RV SONNE expedition SO-275 to the West Indian Ocean in June 2020.

The successful candidate will
(1) reconstruct cold-water coral development by dating corals from sediment cores, (2) investigate sedimentary records with paleoceanographic methods (stable isotopes and Mg/Ca analyses on benthic foraminifera, grain sizes, etc.) from West Indian Ocean cold-water coral sites in order to define the response of cold-water corals to environmental changes in the region, and (3) analyse hydroacoustic data from coral settings.

The University of Bremen follows a diversity strategy. It strives to increase the number of women in academia and strongly encourages applications from suitably qualified female candidates. International applications and applications of academics with a migration background are explicitly welcome. Disabled persons with the same professional and personal qualifications will be given preference.

Deadline for the application is January 20, 2020. Please send your application (including a letter of motivation, CV, names of two potential referees, and a publication list) with the reference number A351/19 to
