The University of Bremen, namely the MARUM - Centre for Marine Environmental Sciences and the Faculty of Geosciences, invites applications for a Ph.D. position in the field of General and Marine Geology, within the framework of the DFG project (under the condition of the final approval of the project):
Pleistocene Sediments around South Georgia: Archives for Antarctic Circumpolar Current dynamics and climate-induced signals in Sub-Antarctica
The research is concentrated on the analyses of gravity cores and ship-based echo-sounder data from sediments around South Georgia during several research cruises of Polarstern and Meteor. The project is a collaborative effort between scientists from the Alfred-Wegner-Institut (AWI-Bremerhaven, Dr. Gerhard Kuhn) and the University of Bremen.
The position is for 3 years. The earliest starting date is 01 October 2019. Salary corresponds to 67 % TV-L E13.
We are searching for an enthusiastic, innovative and committed researcher with interest in marine geosciences. The Ph.D. student will be hosted by the “General and Marine Geology” group, however, most of the analyses have to be performed at AWI in Bremerhaven. Additional training and support are provided by the Bremen International Graduate School for Marine Sciences, GLOMAR, and Helmholtz Graduate School POLMAR, which offer expert- and transferrable-skills courses, coaching, networking opportunities. In this way, the Ph.D. student will acquire a solid background across multiple disciplines of marine sciences.
- Completed M.Sc. or equivalent degree in geosciences or related discipline
- Knowledge of marine geosciences, sedimentology, paleoceanography, and sub-bottom profiler work
- Interest and knowledge in geological data information systems, seafloor imaging methods and processing
- Applicants should be fluent in English, verbally and with excellent writing skills, and enjoy working in an international and interdisciplinary team
