The MARUM – Center for Marine Environmental Sciences at the University of Bremen is offering - under the condition of job release – a position for a

Postdoctoral Researcher (f/m/d)
German federal pay scale EG 13 TV-L (70 %)
The position is limited until February 28th, 2022

The Research Faculty MARUM at the University of Bremen, Germany, has the overarching scientific goal to achieve a better understanding of key processes in the marine environment. The research themes are: Ocean and Climate, Geosphere-Biosphere Interactions and Seafloor Dynamics.

MARUM will be filling 1 post-doc position in the general area of Marine Geotechnology, Tectonics, Fluid Flow and Sediment Deformation as soon as possible. We are searching for enthusiastic and dynamic young researchers with experience in these fields and the ability to join a research team that is carrying out seagoing expeditions and shore-based laboratory studies to quantify deformation.

The successful candidate will develop his/her research program in the framework of the Research Area SD: Seafloor dynamics and in particular associated to research projects tackling plate-rate deformation in subduction zones and subaquatic landslides triggered by earthquakes.

The work will include

  • Geotechnical experiments on natural sediments and rocks to study geohazards (seismogenesis), with a special focus on dynamic triaxial and direct shear experiments
  • Processing of long-term data from seafloor and borehole observatories, in particular large data volumes using Matlab and other more specialised software
  • Interpretation of sedimentological, tectonic and geotechnical data
  • Participation into international research cruises.

Experience in research applications and operation of soil mechanical testing equipment and Matlab processing (ideally also programming) are mandatory. Applicants with interdisciplinary approaches in their research are encouraged to consult our websites (http://www.marum.de/Marine_Geotechnik.html) for potential synergies and cooperation with other groups.

Applications should include a CV, a list of publications, a statement describing research interests, the applicant’s research and technical background as they relate to the position, and contact information for 3 referees.

MARUM has developed into an internationally recognised centre for marine research with a focus on the geosciences, anchored at the University of Bremen. More information on research and technology at MARUM is available at www.marum.de.

The University of Bremen follows a diversity strategy. It strives to increase the number of women in the academy and strongly encourages applications from suitably qualified female candidates. International applications and applications of academics with a migration background are explicitly welcome.
