The Department of Communications Engineering of the University of Bremen offers (under the condition of job release) a research position as

PhD Candidate (f/m/d) (E 13 TV-L) (100%)

in

Satellite Communications

for 3 years. The position should be filled as soon as possible.

The research position is granted under the University Bremen Excellence Chair program of Prof. Petar Popovski from Aalborg University, in collaboration with Prof. Armin Dekorsy (head of the Department of Communications Engineering).

The research is carried out at the Department of Communications Engineering at the University of Bremen in collaboration with the Connectivity Section at Aalborg University. The tasks include conducting excellent research, authoring of scientific publications, and participation in international conferences. This position offers the opportunity to pursue a PhD degree.

Project description:

The key objective of the project is to complement the research experience of the University of Bremen in designing baseband technologies for wireless communications with the expertise of Prof. Popovski in designing access protocols for wireless (satellite) networks. The research aims at a joint design of baseband and access technologies, which are needed for high performance networks of small satellites for the New Space area.

A sample of possible research topics includes, but is not limited to:

  • Wireless transmission schemes and protocols.
  • Machine learning for joint communication and distributed processing on small satellites.
  • Design and analysis of Internet-of-Things (IoT) connectivity with satellite systems.

Requirements:

The successful candidate will have

  • Excellent master or Dipl.-Ing. university degree in electrical/electronic engineering, or closely related fields such as applied mathematics or computer science.
  • Strong analytical and mathematical skills, especially in statistics, stochastic modelling, optimization and/or machine learning.
  • Good knowledge of communication engineering, signal processing and networking. Knowledge in communication theory is a plus.
  • Programming skills (MATLAB, Python, C/C++).
  • Very good knowledge of English language as the studies will be carried out in an international team.
  • Excellent communication skills and enthusiasm to work in a team.
  • Prior research experience and publications are desirable.
