The MARUM - Centre for Marine Environmental Sciences at the University of Bremen,
is offering (under the condition of job release)
One Ph.D. position for 3 years,
Salary group 13 TV-L (66,6 %)
The employment is fixed-term and governed by the Act of Academic Fixed-Term Contract,
§2 I (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz – WissZeitVG). Therefore, candidates may only be
considered for appointment if they still have the respective qualification periods
available in accordance with § 2 (1) WissZeitVG. The earliest starting date is
April 1st, 2019.
At MARUM Ph.D. students are supervised by a team of experienced scientists. Additional
training and support are offered by the Bremen International Graduate School for Marine
Sciences, GLOMAR. These offers include expert as well as skills and method courses,
coaching, networking opportunities, and the opportunity to compete for internal funds.
At MARUM, Ph.D. students acquire expert knowledge in their field and a solid background
across many disciplines of marine sciences.
The Cluster of Excellence “The Ocean Floor – Earth’s Uncharted Interface” is part of the
Research Faculty MARUM. Within the project “processes and dynamics of vents and seeps” the
work for the position is part in the general area “The Ocean Floor as Reactor“
Specific duties will include:
• Seafloor mapping using multi-beam and single beam data
• Participation in research cruises
• Processing of ROV dives
• Investigation of sediment and/or water samples
• Opportunity for scientific qualification in the context of a Ph.D. degree
• Completed M.Sc. or equivalent degree in geosciences or related discipline
• Knowledge of marine geosciences, sedimentology and/or geochemistry, hydro-acoustics
• Willingness to participate in research cruises of the Cluster of Excellence
• Fluent in English, verbally and with excellent writing skills, and enjoy working
in an international and interdisciplinary team
MARUM has developed into an internationally recognised center for marine research with a focus
on the geosciences, anchored at the University of Bremen.
