To offer assistance for analog and digital projects/events marking the university’s anniversary, all members of the University of Bremen (students, lecturers, researchers, and technical and administrative staff) were able to apply for support from a project fund for specific projects and events as part of “50 Years of the University of Bremen”. The following projects and events received support from the project fund.
Students have shaped the University of Bremen throughout the fifty years of its existence just as its president, professors, and researchers have. That is why four history students surveyed alumni about their activism for this podcast. How did they become politically involved? What did they demonstrate against? How did their time at the University of Bremen shape their life later on? An episode will be released for every decade, looking at the prominent themes of each era – from communist groups to feminist struggles and activism against right-wing extremism. In addition to interviews with former students, the episodes include background information about the themes covered and about the university’s development. The team behind the project consists of history students Lea Bussas, Luise Eckhardt, Lennart Edel, and Inga Kemper. The project was born in a seminar named “Of Everyday Things and Research Systems – the History of the University of Bremen in Objects”, held by Dr. Thekla Keuck.
How does academia work? How is it associated with philosophy? In this podcast entitled “Philosophy trifft!” (“Philosophy Meetings”), philosophers do what they do best: They ask questions and evaluate. They obtain answers from academics at the University of Bremen, and from very different faculties, too. How does research work? What are the differences between the disciplines? What is that we all have in common? We who are searching for … for what exactly? There are roughly six podcast episodes planned with the first to be released in March 2021. The film series “In/Visible” will present portraits of people and places at the University of Bremen that tend to stay invisible in everyday college life. The films will consequently reveal unconventional and surprising perspectives of the University of Bremen. They will be researched, shot, and edited by Cultural Studies students themselves as part of a seminar under anthropologist and filmmaker Dr. Martin Gruber (during the summer semester of 2021). The films will be released to Bremen’s general public at City 46 theater in fall 2021 as part of the “Campus City” program during the anniversary celebrations. The films will also be published on a website designed specially for them.

Experienced lecturer Simon Wenkelewsky (producer, cameraman, and editor at imageinmotion) at the Centre for Media, Communication and Information Research – ZeMKI (Zentrum für Medien-, Kommunikations- und Informationsforschung, University of Bremen) was tasked with leading the realization of this project, which is being conducted for teaching purposes. The video project aims to convey an impression of the campus atmosphere and exceptional aspects of studying at the University of Bremen over the last fifty years. To this end, the students developed a format incorporating a filmed juxtaposition of a selection of current and former students and staff from various decades of the university’s existence. The students are preparing the content for the head-to-head talks and overseeing them, too. There will be a range of main themes for the various protagonists, ultimately creating individual, monothematic clips of about 5 to 10 minutes as well as a complete work of about 30 to 45 minutes. The project is being led by Simon Wenkelewsky and Christoph Sodemann. It will be made in multiple seminars, with conception and preparations taking place in the current winter semester and shooting to be done in the 2021 summer semester.
The young University of Bremen wanted to reform learning and help shape the city. Today, fifty years later, this mission has gained a new relevance owing to omnipresent demands for more knowledge transfer and societal exchange. How does the university come into the city and how does the city come to the university? What knowledge does the university produce about the city and what role does that knowledge have in the urban society’s debates and transformation processes? A film-project seminar under Dr. Martina Grimmig, lecturer at the Department of Anthropology and Cultural Research, will explore these questions in cooperation with filmmaker Sebastian Eschenbach during the 2021 summer semester, using as an example a Bremen neighborhood: Gröpelingen. As the old port district and a paradigmatic location of transformation, Gröpelingen has always been a place of university research and intervention, especially during the founding stages of the university. In the seminar, the students retrace the history of university research in Gröpelingen in archives, conversations with researchers, city tours together, and oral-history workshops with local stakeholders and residents, and they reflect on the effects of this history. A video installation will be created as a product and visible conclusion of the project.

Multiple thousands of students have graduated from the University of Bremen with a teaching qualification since it was founded. Many of these students are or were teachers in Bremen and, as a result, made a lasting impression on the schooling lives of countless school students. Teacher education connects the university to the city in an exceptional way. This project will provide insights into the – largely unwritten – history of teacher education at the university. Research and interviews will be used to design a movie in which history comes to life through memories, flashbacks, and found objects. “Let’s Talk about Science” is the name of a televised series of talk shows in which Bremen students wish to present all twelve faculties of the University of Bremen. The idea for it was born in the summer semester of 2020 during a media seminar called “50 Years of the University of Bremen – an Exciting PR Exercise”. The participants in it were just as amazed as they were inspired by the broad academic profile that the University of Bremen offers. The project idea became a proposal that was submitted to the “50 Years of the University of Bremen” fund, and it found success. During the winter semester, and now also the forthcoming summer semester, a media-practice seminar under lecturer Christoph Sodemann at the Centre for Media, Communication and Information Research – ZeMKI (Zentrum für Medien-, Kommunikations- und Informationsforschung, University of Bremen) is investigating the subject. The students are currently working on the most important aspects of the theoretical underpinning so that they can begin producing the shows together with the faculties in April.
Students in the Public History section at the Institute of History are congratulating the University of Bremen on its fiftieth anniversary by making an anniversary calendar. Based on objects such as the Drop Tower and events as dramatic as the cafeteria fire, students tell exciting stories about people and happenings, make structures and processes vivid, and bring situations to life. In a society of knowledge and education, what developments are reflected in the University of Bremen’s history? What does today’s campus life consist of? Budding public historians looked at these questions and others in a teaching-and-learning project spanning multiple semesters. Before the Covid pandemic arrived, they examined the history of “their” university in objects by studying sources at various archives in Bremen. Then, building on the previous seminars, a group of students developed a multichannel strategy for their fellow students’ object histories during the winter semester of 2020/2021. The histories can be reused in analog as well as digital media as a result. Under the leadership of historian Dr. Thekla Keuck, for instance, students created a calendar with twelve objects’ histories. In addition to the print edition, there is also a digital version and a Twitter account called @unibremen50 where the objects’ histories are posted in a compressed format.
“#IchBinUniBremen” (“#IAmUniversityOfBremen”) is an audiovisual project that presents fifty people from the university community in image and video. They include students and professors as well as administration staff, alumni, and employees whose everyday work contributes to the university’s success. Alongside a digital exhibition on the University of Bremen’s website, there are also plans for a social-media campaign accompanied by a photographic collage and videos. Matej Meža and Anamaría Pabón-Maldonado are the coordinators of the project, which will commence in spring 2021 with the launch of the digital exhibition.
The beginning years of the University of Bremen were marked by a series of contentious political disputes on the campus, in the city, and at a federal level. As part of the project “Searching for Traces – Political Conflicts about the Bremen Model”, members of the university from different status groups together use archive material, literature, and conversation with witnesses from the era to examine what actually happened back then and what remains of the Bremen Model today. They also seek to find out what we can learn from the questions discussed at the time and from the forms of political intervention, and how this can shape the university now and in the future. The project consequently combines an exploration of the university’s history with issues of political science and democratic theory. Its results will be prepared digitally in order to provide ideas for present-day debate and self-assurance processes at the university. The Study of Religion/Religious Education student self-governance committee is inviting guests for the twenty-seventh Study of Religion conference. This year’s conference will take place online from May 13 to 15, 2021 and be themed: “Forming (and Educating) Diversity – Bremen Religion Teaching: the Model for the Future”. Today’s method of teaching religion in Bremen is a model that is unique in Germany. Instead of dividing school students by faith, it enables shared, interreligious learning. The conference will be held online this year as a physical event will not be possible. However, this also means that viewers from outside the discipline can take part in the conference.

Fifty years of university also means fifty years of student politics and government in Bremen. Students made the university a venue for major debate and confrontation, moving far beyond issues of university policy. Our exhibition outlines half a century of student politics and self-government in Bremen. Great successes, painful defeats, and historic events will be shown. With the “Gestern Morgen Heute” (“Yesterday Tomorrow Today”) project, students of the Institute for Art History, Film Studies, Art Education at the University of Bremen focus on an artistic presentation of key moments in the history of the university’s development. What relationships, memories, and identities are significant? What signposts toward the future can be seen and what utopias are there? Together with two theater makers, the students embark on a search for clues as part of an intensive-format seminar. The process concludes by staging an online presentation with symbol-laden objects and personal finds featuring in ways that are at times abstract, poetic, and humorous. It aims to design a shared, associative space for thinking and experiencing using artistic means. This space will provide stimulus for thoughts about the past, present, and future of the university and for beginning a conversation.

Pieces by the Center for Performance Studies and Theater of Assemblage, crossing education, academia, and art for the fiftieth anniversary of the University of Bremen
A performative assemblage choir and other acts of the University of Bremen. The Theater of Assemblage and students of Performance Studies perform the university’s charter documents and speak with invited guests in front of and with the audience, discussing questions of lead-giving images and image-shaping leaders, of rules and codes, and of constitution and constitutionality at the University of Bremen and in its community in times past, present, and future.
The events are planned to take place on four Thursday evenings between September and November 2021 in the city center and at the university.
To mark the university’s anniversary, the Equal Opportunity Office wants to cast a humorous and critical look at the current state of (in)equality in the higher education system over the last 50 years up to the present day. To that end, an Equality Slam (similar to a poetry slam) will be held at the Schwankhalle on October 29, starting at 8 p.m.
The Equality Slam is open to all performers* who would like to tackle the topic onstage.

Digital transformation is changing our lives, and its pace is growing, too. The University of Bremen has a driving role within the digital ecosystem. More than ten professors in Faculty 07 research concepts of the digital economy and regularly apply them to practice through the “Diginomics Research Talks”. This proven subject format will be offering a special event for CAMPUS CITY (from mid to late October 2021): a conference spotlighting selected aspects of digital transformation with special future relevance in an economic and socioeconomic context. Taking into consideration the (post-) Covid-19 situation, three main digital-economy topics with particular relevance for Bremen’s situation will be presented in academic flashlight presentations by the Diginomics group.

The major research focus of Marine, Polar and Climate Research at the University of Bremen is presented here using selected examples on a touchscreen terminal. University scientists take part in projects with an interdisciplinary focus to search for answers to some of the most urgent questions that are relevant for the future. They involve themselves in a high-profile area coordinated by MARUM – Center for Marine Environmental Sciences. This exhibit particularly emphasizes the significance of worldwide connections for successful research. The projects presented are characterized by very close, interdisciplinary cooperation with nonuniversity institutions in the region through the U Bremen Research Alliance and, moreover, by international links that span the globe.
The exhibit can be integrated with various university events during its 2021 anniversary year, for example at events in the city. In doing so, the residents of Bremen gain the opportunity to learn about this important field of knowledge at the University of Bremen in their everyday lives.

MindDAY, scheduled to take place in Bremen’s city center in fall 2021, is all about the mind. The greater public in Bremen will be able to listen to short presentations about Bremen’s neuroscientific research, experience the phenomenon of the mind themselves at hands-on stations, and seek out dialog with scientists at the University of Bremen. Self-help groups will be invited to participate.
The organizer team from the Faculties of Physics (Dr. Udo Ernst), Biology (Professor Olivia Masseck), and Computer Science (Professor Tanja Schultz) are looking forward to lively participation.
Being an organization aware of its societal function and responsibility is something that has been an essential element of the University of Bremen since its establishment. In 1986 the University of Bremen was the first university in Germany to adopt a civil clause. It has also been reflected in the university’s main objectives since 2012. During this anniversary year, the theme will be addressed in a variety of ways, with plans for a documentary on the matter as well as one or two presentation and discussion events directed toward the public. Teaching staff and students will be invited to consider the theme in their subjects in a discipline-specific manner. There are also plans for accompanying cultural events.

Professor Justus Notholt, a physicist, and Dr. Stephan Leupold, a chemist, are presenting two physics/chemistry shows as part of the “50 Years of the University of Bremen” anniversary program. The events will each be of 45 to 60 minutes’ duration and show a number of experiments in the fields of physics and chemistry. Some of the experiments will also make reference to the work and research at the university.
This project is being conducted by Dr. Ingrid Arndt and Dr. Eileen Schwarzenberg, assistant lecturers in Inclusive Education at Faculty 12, in cooperation with sports club Werder 1899 e.V. and Bremen football association Bremer Fußballverband e.V. They plan to investigate how partnerships between schools, sports clubs, and sports associations can be developed and expanded, with an aim of allowing more social involvement for children and teenagers in and through sport and promoting this involvement with practical processes, too. To obtain these results, they will interview various stakeholders in the field. The project is integrated with several courses at Faculty 12 and the university’s students are contributing to it.
The following activities are planned for the anniversary year:
- June 11, 2021: an inclusive soccer workshop for “Kinder-Uni 2021”for children aged 8 to 13 years
- June 30, 2021: networking day with stakeholders in the fields of inclusion and sports in Bremen, taking place at Weserstadion through Special Olympics Bremen
- October 15, 2021: Campus City 2021 – seminar in front of Weserstadion
