A Fresh Start with History: The Return of Sports Education

A new beginning with tradition – since the winter semester 2024/25, the University of Bremen has once again been offering the degree program in Sports Science for teaching. With this, the university reconnects with a past that was known for its good reputation and innovative ideas. The new start builds on these successes, but with a fresh perspective on societal challenges and new didactic concepts. We spoke with student Martyna Szarmach and the lead professor Dr. Ina Hunger...

The reintroduction of the sports teaching degree at the University of Bremen comes at an important time: the demand for qualified sports teachers is growing, especially in Bremen. Many students see this as an opportunity to combine their passion for sports with a regional career perspective. For student Martyna Szarmach, it was the perfect moment to study in Bremen, where she wants to settle both personally and professionally: “I feel at home in Bremen and I think it’s great that the sports teaching degree is now being offered here again.”

Sports Education with a Future Perspective

The new degree program is clearly geared toward the future of the profession "sports teacher." Particular emphasis is placed on diversity, the breadth of movement and sports culture, and the development of young people through physical activity, as highlighted by lead professor Dr. Ina Hunger. Student reflection on their role as teachers and the analysis of societal challenges in the areas of body, leisure, and health also play a decisive role.

Where Theory Meets Practice

Although the sports facilities and lecture halls may seem physically separated at first glance, theory and practice go hand in hand at the University of Bremen. Dr. Ina Hunger explains that the playful and athletic offerings are directly linked to theory. In this way, practical experiences can be contextualized, understood, and then didactically evaluated. But theory also comes alive in the lecture hall. Everyday practical examples support theoretical insights.

The knowledge gained during the studies can be tested directly in two school internships. This allows scientific reflection to be linked with everyday school life and strengthens career choices already during studies.

Studying and Shaping

Studying in a newly introduced degree program brings both challenges and opportunities. For the first cohort of students, this means they have to create traditions and rituals themselves. They cannot rely on the experiences of previous generations, which gives them the unique opportunity to help shape the character and orientation of the program significantly.

For professor Dr. Ina Hunger, teaching and interacting with the new students are the greatest highlights of her work. She especially enjoys the conceptual work and getting to know non-university partners in sports. “In Bremen, I learn something new and meet new people every day; it’s a great time,” she emphasizes, highlighting the enriching interdisciplinary exchange.

Martyna Szarmach, a student in the sports teaching program, finds the lectures with Professor Ina Hunger particularly exciting. She appreciates not only the high level of expertise but also the friendly and engaging way the lecturer brings the material to life. Another highlight are the regular visits from various guests such as the State Sports Federation, the Sportgarten, Werder Bremen, as well as the Vice Presidents of the ICSSPE (International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education) and the DTB (German Gymnastics Federation). These offer students valuable insights into different areas of sports. Martyna also enjoys the practical parts of the program, as they provide an ideal connection between theory and practice.

Outlook and Further Development

Despite the successful start, future plans are already concrete. A further, non-school-based bachelor’s program focusing on health topics is in preparation. The education-oriented program will also be expanded. In the winter semester 2025/26, there will be teaching offerings for the early childhood education sector. Additionally, long-term cooperation with other disciplines in the area of “movement as a cross-cutting theme” is being pursued.

What has already become clear after just one full semester: the reintroduction of the sports program at the University of Bremen brings people together – in motion, in exchange, and in collaborative creation. For both teachers and students, it’s “a great time,” as Professor Dr. Ina Hunger sums it up. All in all, a successful new beginning with a positive outlook for an exciting future.
