As a long-time companion of Universität Bremen, he significantly shaped the Bremen academic hub in many ways. During this time, he contributed significantly to the development of the sports studies program as a planner in the Committee on Sports within the Teacher Training Planning Commission for the founding senate. Willi Lemke became well-known to the general public as the successful manager of Werder Bremen, a position he held before serving as the Senator for Education and Science in Bremen from 1999 to 2006. Together with his wife Heide, Willi Lemke was also a founding donor of the University of Bremen Foundation. His commitment to social justice, education, and international understanding is a lasting legacy.
