The goal of the Integrated Regional Climate Lab North Jakarta and Port (JaC-Lab) project is to integrate urgent short- and middle-term climate change adaptation and mitigation actions into a long-term sustainable urban transition frame and network. Using the Urban Transition Management method, the project aims to guide local stakeholders in addressing and implementing measures of adaptation and climate change mitigation based on a sustainable urban development strategy.
The definition phase concentrates on establishing a multi-stakeholder co-design process to produce a common Transition Agenda. The aim is to develop several high priority R&D projects which will be integrated into a comprehensive action frame- and network of sustainability transition. The network shall be implemented as the "North Jakarta Sustainability Living Lab" in which interrelated multiplier and pilot measures are combined to serve the overall sustainable urban development scenario.
In the definition phase, the artec team with work together with Indonesian partners to explore the decisive vulnerabilities that different areas and sectors in North Jakarta are experiencing, both with regards to already existing and potentially growing environmental risks. In line with an integrated understanding of vulnerability, this component of Jac-Lab seeks to chart socio-economic and cultural factors that predispose communities, corporations or critical infrastructures to a higher susceptibility towards those risks. Besides data on land subsidence, sea level change rates and flooding events, those factors include questions of tenurial security, access to basic facilities and infrastructures, mobility levels, as well as the composition of social strata in formal and informal settlements. This component of Jac-Lab aims to produce a set of overview vulnerability maps of Northern Jakarta that will feed into strategic planning and scenario development as well as resilience design.
