The future of the energy transition is characterised by major technological, economic and social uncertainties and questions about the appropriate transformation path. Extreme climatic events and current geopolitical developments are also creating ever-increasing political pressure to act. They influence decisions in the transformation process and its speed. Due to their complex nature, the resulting uncertainties in the design of the energy transition can no longer be represented using conventional approaches to risk assessment.

The resilience model addresses precisely such an expanded concept of uncertainty, i.e. it aims to maintain the system function even under seriously changed conditions. However, as the current far-reaching transformation processes cannot be understood as a reaction to singular shock events or crises, but must increasingly be understood as mutually influencing, multiple crises, the question arises today as to how the future of the energy transition must be shaped against this background.

The energy transition cannot be understood solely as a technological paradigm shift, but must also be understood and resolved as a social one. At the same time, it is important to reach viable decisions and solutions faster and faster. On the other hand, successfully mastering this transformation process and actively shaping a holistic, responsible and sustainable energy transition offers a great opportunity to emerge stronger from the necessary structural change in the future. This is why the 35th Bremen University Talks will highlight key aspects that can make a positive contribution to the future of the energy transition.
Scientific coordination
