The following information concerns events and workshop offers by Bremen Early Career Researcher Development (BYRD). Please note that in our program we also list events offered by other parties, for example perspektive promotion (for  female doctoral researchers), the SZHB, the Personalentwicklung (website in German language only) and the SuUB. Who can participate in events and workshops of BYRD?

We offer workshops for doctoral and post-doctoral researchers of the University of Bremen. On the basis of cooperation agreements, doctoral students and postdocs belonging to the institutes of the UBremen Research Alliance, the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg, the Hochschule Bremen and the Hochschule Bremerhaven can also participate. The workshop description specifies whether the workshop is aimed at doctoral students, postdocs or both. Additionally, there are also some offers for those interested in doctoral studies at Bremen University.

I am not (yet) doing my doctorate at the University of Bremen. Can I still participate in the workshops offered by BYRD?

Normally, the workshops are reserved for doctoral students and postdocs of the University of Bremen and its cooperation partners (institutes of the UBremen Research alliance, Uni Oldenburg, Hochschule Bremen, Hochschule Bremerhaven). If there are still places available shortly before the beginning of the event, we can exceptionally also accept members of other universities and Master students of the University of Bremen. How can I register for the workshops?

You can register online via our registration form. A link to the form can be found at the bottom of the course description. Please enter the correct event number in the form. The number can be found in the workshop description.

Do I have to pay to attend the workshop?

Currently, our workshops are free of charge for participants. Please note that the workshops are very cost-intensive for the university, so please contact us by e-mail to byrdprotect me ?!vw.uni-bremenprotect me ?!.de if you are unable to attend a workshop.

What happens after my online registration?

Your online registration will be confirmed by e-mail. However, this does not guarantee your admission for the workshop. If you do not receive an e-mail, please check your spam folder or fill in the form again with your correct e-mail address.

Approximately 14 days before the event, you will receive an admission or rejection from us via e-mail. If there is a waiting list, we may contact you at short notice in case you can move up.

What happens if I am not admitted to a workshop?

If the workshop is fully booked, we will automatically put you on the waiting list. If another person cancels, you have the chance to move up. In this case we will inform you at short notice.

Can I attend the workshop without admission?

No.

For how many workshops can I register?

The number of registrations is unlimited. However, we ask you not  to indiscriminately register for all workshops for reasons of fairness. If you are unable to attend a workshop, please cancel via e-mail to byrdprotect me ?!vw.uni-bremenprotect me ?!.de in good time.

What should I do if I am unable to attend an event?

If you cannot attend one of our events for which you have registered, please cancel via e-mail to byrdprotect me ?!vw.uni-bremenprotect me ?!.de. Please do so well in advance so that other people can take your spot. If you do not attend a workshop without cancellation, we reserve the right to exclude you from future events.

What happens if I do not attend a workshop without cancellation?

I unexpectedly cannot attend the workshop. Can I designate a substitute person or pass on my workshop place to a friend?

No, you cannot. Please cancel as soon as possible via e-mail to byrdprotect me ?!vw.uni-bremenprotect me ?!.de.

In case I have to cancel my workshop: Can I reserve a place for the next workshop with the same topic?

No, please register again regularly. All workshop dates will be announced in good time on our events page.

What if I am unable to attend the entire workshop (e.g. if I can only come later, have to leave early or have to leave for a while during the workshop)?

In general, we expect full attendance at the event given the associated costs and with respect to the other participants. When registering, please consider other obligations and refrain from participation in case of doubt.

Is my workshop accessible?

If you have special needs, please feel free to contact us. We will do our best to make the workshop accessible for you.

In which room does my workshop take place?

The room number can be found in the confirmation e-mail and in the workshop description online.

When does my workshop begin?

The dates can be found in the confirmation e-mail and in the workshop description at the top of the page. The dates are as stated, i.e. without “academic quarter”. Please arrive on time for the beginning of the course.

In which language is the workshop held?

Workshops with an English description will be held in English. Otherwise, the workshop language is German.

How many people will participate in the event?

Depending on the type of event, the number of participants ranges between 8 and 16. Panel discussions and other public events usually have an audience of more than 20 people.

Who are the trainers?

Our workshops are conducted by external professional trainers or members of the University of Bremen. We have been working with most of our trainers for many years. Information about the trainer of your workshop is usually provided in the workshop description.

Do I have to prepare or bring something for the workshops?

This information can be found in the workshop description and/or your confirmation of participation.

Does BYRD provide catering during the event?

Normally, there is no catering. (Please do not leave any cups etc. in the room after the event.)

Do I get a certificate of participation?

If you wish to receive a certificate of participation, please contact us after full participation in the workshop at byrdprotect me ?!vw.uni-bremenprotect me ?!.de.

Can I gain CPs by attending BYRD events?

No.

I have feedback on the workshop; how can I pass it on?

A few days after the workshop, you will receive an e-mail with the link to the evaluation sheet. We appreciate your constructive criticism.

There is no workshop on my topic. Where can I make suggestions?

There is a box for that in the evaluation sheet. Alternatively, you can send us your request by e-mail to byrdprotect me ?!vw.uni-bremenprotect me ?!.de.
