Internship in Germany

To satisfy the students' demand for practical experience during their course of study internships are a compulsory part of most curriculums.

The term internship usually refers to a temporary employment which students complete as part of their curriculum in order to gain practical experience.

After the implementation of the tiered degree programmes the term internship has been broadened to encompass activities in the occupational fields that are directly related to the degree programmes.

One of the primary goals of bachelor programs is "employability".This goal encompasses more than the literal translation into German as "Arbeitsfähigkeit" or "Berufsfähigkeit". Practical training has gained a new dimension at the University of Bremen as part of the structural reforms. It is no longer sufficient to train students for an academic profession per se, but equally important to build up competences in their specific professional field.

The university offers many programmes meant to help students achieve these goals. Programmes to help develop skills in foreign languages, information technologies, as well as presentation and communication skills.

Internships are an important building block in achieving "employability". Both, the process of finding a internship as well as having the internship approved are guided by strict quality guidelines and assure a win-win situation for students and companies alike.

The handbook "Praktikum im Studium" offers students and companies important information concerning internships. The handbook contains information on legal issues such as

  • internship contracts,
  • insurance,
  • wages and pay
  • quality standards for the internship.

The handbook also provides answers on questions such as: finding the right internship / the right intern, what can I expect of an internship / an intern, what measures insure the highest mutual satisfaction. You will find the Handbook under "Further Information" or in our download section.

Internship Abroad

To satisfy student's demand for practical training abroad during their course of study most degree programmes require an internship. An internship is meant to give students the opportunity to learn about their field in a real working environment. The emphasis lies on learning.

An internship abroad offers students aditional advantages:

  • You will learn about new cultures and working environments
  • You will learn new ways of working and problem solving strategies
  • You will be able to practise and perfect your language skills under real life conditions
  • You will widen your chances foran international career

The "International Internship Manual" is meant as a compact guide, to help students at the University of Bremen to succesfully plan their internships abroad and have a valuable experience. To help with questions you will find information on different regions of the world as well as information on financing and where to find additional and reliable information.

The part of the handbook which is addressed to employers is meant to facilitate communications with employers. All this aime to help you shape your individual planning stage, since there is no such thing such as "a golden path" or a "secret recipe". Your time abroad will - not only in hindsight - be one of the most valuable and best experiences during your studies. The more so if it has been tailored to your individual ideas and wishes. Tailored by you on the basis of solid information.

Having said this, enjoy and we wish you success with your internship abroad.

Please note: You will find further information supplementing the Information contained in this handbook on the Career Centers german website. This information is targeted especially at students at the University of Bremen. There you will also find information on Seminars organized by the Career Center.
