The 2025 Annual Report of the "Anti-Feminism Reporting Center" has been published

A sad record high: The "Anti-Feminism Reporting Center" recorded a total of 640 anti-feminist incidents in 2025. That is 82 more cases than the previous year.

Despite a significant number of unreported cases, the Anti-Feminism Reporting Center has observed an escalation in anti-feminist attack patterns. In particular, attacks motivated by misogyny and gender-based violence are on the rise.

Particularly striking is the rise in attacks in the digital sphere: About one-third of documented incidents take place there. Added to this are new forms of violence enabled by the use of artificial intelligence. The case of a rape network organized via a messaging service, among others, illustrates just how drastic the impact of this trend is. In these groups, instructions on how to commit rape, information on how to sedate women, and photos and videos of the crimes were shared.

The number of attacks on feminist organizations is also reaching new highs. Women’s organizations, professional associations working in the field of gender-based violence, and committed individuals are particularly at risk. Incidents documented include threats, sexual assaults, property damage, arson, and the publication of the confidential addresses of women’s shelters.

Based on the available data, Palo Quirion is calling for a comprehensive strategy to address anti-feminism in politics and civil society: “The full scope of violence targeting gender equality and self-determination rights can only be effectively countered if the destructive effects of anti-feminism on democratic structures and principles are finally taken seriously.”

For more information, we recommend reading the situation report, the summary, or the press release.
The research association “GERDEA” and the “Federal Association for Mobile Counseling” have published guidelines on “Dealing with right-wing hostility towards science.”

For about ten years now, the far right has been increasingly mobilizing against academia in order to shift debates to the right and spread its ideas outside political institutions. Among other things, researchers and teachers who address gender relations, racism, the continuing colonial past, and right-wing extremism itself are being targeted. Topics such as man-made climate change and the search for truth through open examination also seem to be a thorn in their side.

The attacks on universities are not only directed against individuals, but above all against the idea of open, critical, and democratic science itself.

GERDEA and the Federal Association for Mobile Counseling want to offer practical assistance with this policy paper. Whether for people who are confronted with right-wing attacks for the first time, who have been repeatedly affected because of their research results, or people who want to stand up for democracy and against right-wing extremism, racism, anti-Semitism, anti-feminism, and other ideas of inequality.

If you would like to learn more, you can access the document here.

NOTE: The document is only avaible in German.

A sad record high: in 2024, the "Anti-Feminism Reporting Center" recorded a total of 558 anti-feminist incidents. This represents a 50 percent increase compared to the previous year.

The “Anti-Feminism Reporting Center” documented approximately 10 incidents per week in 2024. Attacks directed against individuals mainly affected women and the LGBTQIA+ community, especially trans* people. However, civil society engagement for women's rights, equality, and gender, sexual, or family diversity was also a major focus. Reporting center director Ans Hartmann explains: “Anti-feminism must be addressed in terms of its relevance to extreme right-wing movements and radicalization, as well as in connection with rising numbers of hate crimes and gender-based violence. Anti-feminism endangers large sections of the population and is a massive security risk that must be urgently addressed by society as a whole.”

You can find more under: Meldestelle Antifeminismus - Antifeminismus-melden.de

The newest monitoring report of the DeZIM's NaDiRa "Verborgene Muster, sichtbare Folgen. Rassismus & Diskriminierung in Deutschland", published on the 20.03.2025, highlights, among other things, how racist attitudes are developing in German society.

The 2025 monitoring report of the National Discrimination and Racism Monitor (NaDiRa) "Hidden patterns, visible consequences. Racism and discrimination in Germany" shows the uneven distribution of discriminatory experiences in German society: more than one in two people with a racially labelled identity (54%) stated that they had experienced discrimination at least once a month in 2024. Among people who are not racially labelled, the proportion is 32%. The report explores three key questions:

• How have racist attitudes developed in German society?

• What experiences do racially labelled people have in their everyday lives?

• What effects do experiences of discrimination have?

The results show that racist attitudes are widespread. People who are regularly discriminated against are more likely to suffer from psychological stress and report symptoms of depression and anxiety disorders. In addition, trust in state institutions is dwindling - especially among people with repeated experiences of discrimination.

You can download the complete monitoring report as a pdf in German (PDF NaDiRa Monitoringbericht 2025) or visit the website of the NaDiRa for an English overview of the results.

The university administration has introduced a new reporting address to gain a better picture of the security situation and to take a stand against risks and threats.

The reporting office focuses on issues such as vandalism, discriminatory graffiti, threatening behavior, and hostility.

First and foremost, the address is a reporting and mediation center. Reports are documented and, if necessary, forwarded to departments within and outside the university. Reporting cases is particularly helpful in order to initiate appropriate measures in the event of repetitions and accumulations.

The reporting address is: risk@uni-bremen.de

IMPORTANT: The reporting center is NOT an emergency center! In case of acute threats, please contact the police at 110 and/or the emergency number at 112!

On 5 February 2025, the "Fachgesellschaft Geschlechterstudien" (Gender Studies Association) published a statement in which it emphasised the inviolability of academic freedom. This is not only enshrined in the German "Grundgesetz", but is also a fundamental human right and inextricably linked to democracy. The association draws attention to the threat to this freedom faces due to the statements made by Alice Weidel, who announced at the AfD party conference on 18 January 2025 that all gender studies institutions would be closed. Such statements are not only unconstitutional, but also deeply anti-democratic. Attacks on academic freedom in relation to gender studies could be extended to other disciplines and pose a serious threat to democracy. The association emphasises the importance of the autonomy of science and universities for the future viability of democratic societies. Attacks on academic freedom are attacks on democracy itself.

Of the 92 higher education facilities selected, 22 received special recognition: their equality concepts were rated best by the committee in light of the respective, specific situation and in terms of type and size, and they were awarded the title “Gleichstellungsstarke Universität" (university with high equality). Among the 22 award winners are nine universities, including the University of Bremen!
