After his habilitation, he took up a professorship in mathematics at the University of Bremen in 1977. I took part in the HERE programme. After completing my language course, the HERE office told me about this scholarship. And then, of course, I applied for it."</p> <p>Khaled Swaidan fled Syria in 2015 and came to Bremen via Bavaria. His goal: to learn German and complete a degree. After successfully completing the HERE preparatory programme, he applied for a scholarship from the Jürgens Foundation. And three weeks later I was sailing around on a freighter off the coast of East Asia. That's freedom."</p> <p>Axel Schubert has travelled far and wide in his life. He successfully managed the Bremen Stock Exchange for many years before transferring the traditional company to a foundation in 2001. Then we realise that what we do and work on here is relevant."</p> <p>She loves the vastness of northern Germany and the vastness of the deserts. Dr Cordula Weißköppel is an ethnologist specialising in migration and diaspora research. Her credo is dialogue at eye level - also and especially with the public. This is not always easy. Whether on Bremen's colonial history or our approach to fashion, her topics are always political. And you learn a lot from that."</p> <p>He is a Bremen native with heart and soul, was Senator for Finance and has supported the university from the very beginning. Manfred Fluß. In 2015, he and his wife founded the Manfred and Ursula Fluß Foundation.
