The World Youth Forum Grant addresses South African students. It targets at either Master-students in the final stage of their studies (a master’s thesis must be submitted by the beginning of the intended stay in Bremen) or PhD candidates at the beginning of their research. Recipients of the grant should preferably have an academic focus in the field of cultural or social sciences. A focus on research in Critical Diversity Studies, Postcolonial Studies in the context of European-African entanglements, Environmental Humanities and Contradiction Studies in Late Modernity would be of high interest in the established frame of international cooperation as applicants from our partner universities at&nbsp; <ul><li data-list-item-id="ed6ac50fee85d10fd080e423239bfe5fa">University of the Western Cape, Cape Town</li><li data-list-item-id="eacabb814e6058116d9c66b494999ddce">University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban</li><li data-list-item-id="efa2bacb48f874b38b74e288becaf6ed4">University of the Free State, Bloemfontein</li></ul> will be favoured. Organizational support and local supervision during the stay in Bremen will be offered by the International Office, the Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FB 09) and the interdisciplinary and collaborative research platform Worlds of Contradiction (WOC) at the University of Bremen.&nbsp; The World Youth Forum Grant is open to students with South African citizenship no older than 35 years and preferably studying at one of the three partner Universities of Bremen. The World Youth Forum grant has been enabled by a donation of the Herald Tribune World Youth Forum Alumni Association to the Foundation of the University of Bremen and covers a monthly stipend for living costs and accommodation, a return flight (economy class) from SA to Bremen, registration fees at the University of Bremen, and health insurance. An intensive German language course of three weeks starting at the beginning of the university’s summer term is a further central part of the program.&nbsp; Required documents for your individual application: <ul><li data-list-item-id="e98267cf7f3ff49ac56131b109ef5fb55">A completed electronic application form including personal data and a description of the research and study activities intended in Bremen</li><li data-list-item-id="e6418c655bbd58c003b936b350ba02394">Proof of South African Citizenship</li><li data-list-item-id="ee7b99d6aff17ca32369bb0aab87890ed">Two recent letters of recommendation by members of the scientific staff. One has to be written by a member of the current South African University, the other may be from a previous institution</li><li data-list-item-id="ee21929f9e96cf497170b8da849e67c9e">Proofs of recent and excellent study results or exams in the South African system of Higher Education (70 % or higher)</li><li data-list-item-id="ec6af500d22f292f89ad7ae9719e3a1b7">Proof of admission to a doctoral programme at the home university, if relevant</li><li data-list-item-id="e266239aeaad5ccd32a61ebba218ca688">A meaningful, detailed CV incl. a list of publications (if relevant), professional experiences, and voluntary engagements as part of the application form</li><li data-list-item-id="e9728edb6974b6823a8eacc49009f11f6">Other documents supporting the application (i. e. certificates of employment, proofs of practical training/internships or voluntary commitment), if applicable</li></ul> All documents must be submitted in English language and uploaded to the university’s application system latest by 1st Oct. 2026. After the first step of formal clarification, the second step of application will include an obligatory Zoom in-depth interview to discuss research intentions in Bremen. Appointments will be communicated on time via email. Incomplete applications cannot be considered. Each individual applicant is responsible for ensuring that the first step of formal application is complete with all documents mentioned above.
