Goal-oriented dialogue-based reading as a method for everyday integrated language support in primary schools (ZDL Schule)

1st place Das Goldene Plietsch

Dr Detta Sophie Schütz

In the "ZDL Schule" project, 164 children in four primary schools were supported for eight months in the 2022/2023 school year with the "Target-oriented dialogue-based reading" language support concept. Before and after this period, the language skills of these children and the control group that did not receive support were assessed in order to determine the effects of the support on language acquisition.

"Resilience of maritime infrastructures"

Prof Dr Katharina Reiling

Maritime infrastructures such as offshore wind turbines, submarine cables and seaports are essential for the functioning of the economy and the supply of society. The coronavirus pandemic and the war of aggression in Ukraine have recently highlighted the vulnerability of such infrastructures to crises. The sponsored anthology explores what constitutes the resilience of maritime infrastructures and how these challenges can be mastered legally.

MoleNet: Underground sensor networks for the Sustainable Development Goals

2nd place Das Goldene Plietsch

Prof Dr Anna Förster

The MoleNet project started in 2015 as a cooperation between the FB1 Electrical Engineering (AG ComNets, Anna Förster) and the UFT (Prof. Hartmut Koehler). The aim was to develop a cost-effective and resource-efficient hardware and software solution for ground monitoring. This is a platform that works underground and transmits sensor readings wirelessly. The sensors are interchangeable, examples are soil moisture, pH value or temperature.

Our work consists of developing the hardware and software and implementing customised solutions for various application scenarios. Depending on the application, there are different requirements, but they are usually quite similar. The work will be supervised by the two research assistants. The work is supervised by the two research assistants and carried out by students from Bremen and from our co-operation partners, including Sri Lanka, Cameroon, Kenya, Namibia and Thailand. This results not only in student work, but also in peer-reviewed research publications.

Climate-conscious prescription of Inhalativa

3rd place Das Goldene Plietsch

PD Dr. Guido Schmiemann

The healthcare sector is responsible for around 5% of annual CO2 emissions in Germany. In the primary care sector, the prescription of medicines causes the largest CO2 footprint. Inhaled medicines are primarily used to treat chronic respiratory diseases (asthma and chronic bronchitis). A distinction is made between powder inhalers (= dry powder inhaler, DPI), which contain the active ingredient in powder form, and metered dose inhalers (DA). The latter use propellants to transport the active ingredient into deep sections of the lungs. These propellants are strong greenhouse gases and therefore have a very high potential to damage the atmosphere. In total, metered dose inhalers are responsible for 3.5% of the greenhouse gas emissions of the entire British healthcare system; figures for Germany are not yet available. Powder inhalers are a more climate-friendly alternative with the same effectiveness. With the exception of small children, switching to powder inhalers is possible and feasible for most people.

Knowledge of the climate-damaging effects of metered dose inhalers and the possible (more environmentally friendly) alternatives is not yet widespread in practice. Medical guidelines are a possible instrument for influencing everyday behaviour. The aim of the project was therefore to develop such a guideline and make it available. The guideline is intended to provide assistance in order to facilitate a change in prescribing behaviour and thereby reduce the carbon footprint of the healthcare system.

Wiki retreat: Writing workshop on sustainability communication at universities

4th place Das Goldene Plietsch

Dr Bror Giesenbauer & Julia Trachtmann

The Wiki Retreat project aims to give university members with an affinity for sustainability the space to focus on writing short, action-orientated articles on sustainability at universities in an inspiring place and to file them in the DG HochN Wiki. In this way, it contributes to sustainability communication and the professional networking of change agents in the higher education system.

Deutschlandstipendium as part of the Federal Government's National Scholarship Programme

The University of Bremen participates in the federal government's national scholarship programme launched in 2011 - the Deutschlandstipendium for short. The Deutschlandstipendium supports students with a scholarship of 300 euros per month. A total of 150 euros comes from private sources and 150 euros from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. An annual scholarship is therefore possible from a funding amount of 1,800 euros. Particularly talented and committed students are supported. In addition, the University of Bremen attaches particular importance to other factors that make up a committed personality. The selection process therefore takes into account academic achievements as well as social commitment, personal initiative and special personal circumstances, such as caring for children or family members or a migration background.
