What is meerMINT?
meerMINT is one of 73 STEM clusters that have been funded since 2020 by the former Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
The goal of the meerMINT collaborative project is to bring STEM to life for children and teens between the ages of 10 and 16 in Bremen and Bremerhaven. We offer free activities where you can experiment, tinker, and have fun. We’ll make cosmetics with you, go out into nature and examine it with a digital microscope, program robots, or build cool things with a laser cutter.
Unfortunately, funding for meerMINT has expired, and we are currently unable to offer any new activities. Should this change in the future, we’ll let you know right away here.
STEM (german MINT) stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics
There are currently exciting opportunities for students in Bremen and Bremerhaven at various institutions, such as the University of Bremen, the Constructor University or the Phänomenta Bremerhaven.
Various programs for girls in Bremen and Bremerhaven are available through MINTsteps, another STEM cluster.
How and where can I participate?
At our two locations—known as the meerMINT Docks—we offer a wide variety of programs for different age groups. These include one-time events on specific topics, regular meetings, and a constantly changing lineup of workshops and vacation programs.
We also regularly hold events at other locations and in collaboration with various partners.
Dock Nord / Constructor Space
Dock Nord is just as diverse as its location—the Constructor University campus.
The university’s international students offer insights into the fascinating world of mathematics, computer science, natural sciences, and technology. Together, they tinker, program, conduct research, or simply chat and discuss. From programming and building robots to exploring the surroundings and even making cosmetics—anything is possible at Dock Nord.
Steering a boat with just our thoughts—we wouldn’t do something like that at school!
Everyone between the ages of 10 and 16 is welcome at Dock Nord! Since it’s primarily the students who develop and offer the activities at Dock Nord, there’s a wide variety of activities on different topics and for different age groups. Together in the club room, we build and program small robots, examine house-trained pets, and maybe even conduct a chemical experiment or two. Join the students in exploring the other labs and rooms at Constructor University in search of even more exciting topics!

From making your own cosmetics or practical adhesives to brain teasers and hands-on experiments, anything is possible at Dock Bremerhaven.
From chatting and discussing to participating in competitions like “Jugendforscht”—the Dock leaders are here to support you in every way.
At first, not everything was easy to understand—but as we did the experiments, it all became clear.
Whether young or old, everyone is welcome at Dock Bremerhaven. And in between, there’s always time to explore and try things out in PHÄNOMENTA’s interactive exhibition.

High-performing, diverse, open to reform, and collaborative—that is the University of Bremen. Around 23,000 people study, teach, conduct research, and work on its international campus. Their shared goal is to contribute to the further development of society.
In line with its knowledge transfer strategy, the University of Bremen proactively assumes responsibility in the areas of education and youth. Together with its numerous partners in the Technology Park, it offers a wide range of programs in the area of knowledge (and science) transfer for children, young people, and teachers.
The University of Bremen is responsible for coordinating the consortium, as well as for the project’s communication and public relations. In addition, the cluster management team is responsible for organizing and implementing cross-consortium programs, such as hands-on activities at Explore Science.
Constructor University is a private, state-recognized, English-language research university located in northern Bremen. It offers bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs in the natural sciences, engineering, and social sciences, and is committed to continuing education and knowledge transfer. Interculturalism, excellent research and teaching, and interdisciplinary collaboration define its profile. Its goal is to prepare talented individuals from around the world for positions of responsibility in a globalized workforce. As part of its outreach activities, Constructor University works closely with schools and is involved in educational networks aimed at promoting STEM skills.
As part of the project, the Dock Nord/Constructor Space was established at Constructor University, new cooperation partners were recruited in the neighborhood, and free programs were created for children and youth in the neighborhood, where they can become enthusiastic about various STEM topics and discover their talents.
moreSince 1996, PHÄNOMENTA Bremerhaven e. V. has been delighting visitors with an interactive hands-on exhibition where “touching is encouraged!” Numerous exhibits invite children, teens, and adults to discover and understand scientific phenomena and mathematical challenges in a playful way.
As a recognized extracurricular learning center, PHÄNOMENTA offers, among other things, a children’s chemistry lab, a workshop for everyone, and a geothermal station. Through courses, hands-on activities, and programs such as robot programming, it fosters interest in STEM topics in an accessible way.
As part of the project, PHÄNOMENTA Bremerhaven is expanding local partnerships and creating free programs for children and teens, where they can become enthusiastic about various STEM topics and discover their talents.
moreAt Universum® Bremen, children and teens embark on exciting journeys of discovery into the world of science. Across the thematic areas of technology, people, and nature, approximately 250 interactive exhibits spread over 4,000 m² invite visitors to explore scientific and technical phenomena with all their senses.
As a recognized extracurricular learning center, Universum® offers in-depth educational programs for school classes as well as professional development courses for teachers and educational specialists.
Through Universum® Bremen, training programs are being developed for all participants in meerMINT and the MINTforum Bremen to strengthen both subject-specific and pedagogical and didactic skills, thereby contributing to an increase in the quality of the programs offered at these locations.

moreLessons learned
Looking back on our project, we have compiled a “Lessons Learned” document in which we have summarized our experiences with establishing a STEM cluster. It covers our experiences with building network structures, communication, and target audiences, as well as formats and activities, and addresses the challenges of a STEM cluster in general.
To create this document, we consulted with the Oldenburg STEM cluster AHOI_MINT and worked together to identify what we consider to be the most important points. We hope you enjoy reading it.


The meerMINT Program on Helgoland: An Evaluation of its Effectiveness in Stimulating Young People’s Interest in STEM
Master’s thesis by Corinna Wild, Karlsruhe University of Education, Faculty of Natural and Social Sciences, Institute for Biology and School Garden Development, Master’s Program in Biodiversity and Environmental Education, March 2026.
The school trip to the OPENSEA Student Laboratory of the Alfred Wegener Institute on Heligoland, held for the second time in 2025, was accompanied and evaluated as part of a master’s thesis.
Excerpt from the conclusion of the thesis:
“This research examined the impact of the school trip to Heligoland on the participants’ interest in STEM subjects. The data collected from the guided individual interviews captures the participants’ subjective perceptions during the field trip. The results of this thesis document these perceptions and provide valuable insights into the students’ interest in STEM topics and their personal assessment of the program they experienced.”

As the cluster manager at meerMINT, Hanne is responsible for organization and communication both within the project and with the outside world. Her main goal is to spark a spirit of inquiry in children and teens and to get them excited about STEM. STEM is more than just math, programming, and describing experiments. We encounter STEM every day, and it’s an important part of our lives.
