Following extensive research conducted at our research group, the extension of the research fellowship for Prof. Dr. Nazly Efredis Sanchez at the CVT was approved.

We are pleased that Prof. Dr. Nazly Efredis Sánchez from the Universidad del Cauca in Colombia will be able to continue her research in our research group for another 4 months. As part of a fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Dr. Sánchez will be conducting research from October 2026 through January 2027 on the evaluation of the complexation capacity of deep eutectic solvents (DES) and on the application of dielectrophoresis (DEP) for gold extraction from ore concentrates and mining waste.

The project focuses on two key research questions: Which eutectic solvent is particularly effective for separating gold from mining tailings and ore concentrates? And how effectively can dielectrophoresis be used to separate gold particles from these materials?

The goal of this research is to identify suitable DES for gold extraction and to investigate the potential of DEP as an efficient separation process for recovering gold from mining waste and ore concentrates.

Lena and Jonas traveled to Milan with their research group leader, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jorg Thöming, to conduct spectroscopic measurements.

As part of an academic exchange, members of our research group visited the Dipartimento di Fisica at the Politecnico di Milano. With the support of researchers there, we conducted studies on the electrochemical production of iron from iron oxide using in-situ Raman spectroscopy. In this method, the objective lens of a Raman microscope is immersed directly into the electrolyte, and the laser is focused on the surface of the working electrode while the electrochemical reaction takes place. The substances produced during the reaction can thus be identified immediately based on their Raman signal. The goal is to use the measured data to gain valuable insights into the underlying reaction mechanisms and reaction pathways. This exchange strengthens collaboration between the two working groups and provides insights into the fundamental mechanisms of electrochemical iron oxide reduction.

This year's CVT seminar trip took the group to the AWI on Sylt and featured exciting lectures and discussions.

This year's seminar trip took the working group to List on Sylt, where we were guests at the Alfred Wegener Institute's Wadden Sea Station. The extraordinary location directly on the Wadden Sea provided the ideal setting for intensive work sessions and inspiring exchanges.

The focus was on specialist presentations from the group and discussions of current papers, project proposals, and research ideas. We deliberately allowed plenty of time for this so that we could deal with the respective topics in depth and provide constructive feedback. The scientific part was therefore not only an opportunity for presentation, but also an important platform for the further development of joint research projects.

In addition to the work, there was also plenty of time for shared experiences: cooking, quiz nights, and an excursion to the dune landscape strengthened our team spirit, with Prof. Thöming using his ornithological expertise to teach everyone about the island's bird life.

The days on Sylt were thus characterized by a balanced mix of intensive professional discussion and communal activities. With many new ideas and a strengthened sense of cohesion, we look back on a seminar trip that will remain in our memories for a long time to come.

Kevin also impresses with his colloquium and successfully completes his doctorate.

After Maria, Mehrdad, and Jonas successfully defended their dissertations earlier this year, Kevin followed suit. He impressed the examination board with both his presentation and his subsequent Q&A session, thus successfully completing his doctoral studies.

In his dissertation, entitled “Exploring Catalytic Reactors using Computational Fluid Dynamics: Insights and Limitations,” Kevin focused on numerical flow simulations of catalytic reactors in order to better understand and predict the conditions within them. Initially, heat source-based simulations were used in large parameter studies to better describe the heat transfer from the reactors and to quantify the influence of different catalyst support structures and various process parameters.

In addition, he collaborated with Harm to design a reactor that could be used in magnetic resonance imaging to measure both the temperature and the gas composition in the gas phase with spatial resolution. This data was used to validate reactive flow simulations (rCFD), which were intended to predict the conditions in the reactor with significantly higher resolution. It was found that the simulations were able to reproduce the characteristics in the reactor well, although differences were observed especially in terms of temperature. This comparison was the first of its kind to compare 3D reactive flow simulations with 3D experimental data. Despite the deviations, it became clear that reactive CFD is a powerful tool for gaining detailed insights into reactors that cannot be obtained with any other method. This marks the start of increased use of rCFD in the investigation of chemical reactors, which, with increasing computing power, will allow completely new insights into reactors in the future, making their optimization and predictability possible.

The entire AG Thöming congratulates Jonas on the successful defence of his dissertation entitled “Online monitoring of fuel-range Fischer-Tropsch products via Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Ionization mass spectrometry”. He developed a method for the online monitoring of fuel-range Fischer-Tropsch products. He used the combined technology of Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Ionization (APCI) and mass spectrometry to analyse volatile and medium n-alkanes directly in the gas stream. His method overcomes the disadvantage of long measurement times with classic gas chromatography and delivers initial measurement results eight times faster. The analysis is carried out in the flow, without sample preparation or chromatographic separation - a breakthrough for real-time applications.

This research represents significant progress for process-related analysis in power-to-liquid plants. By monitoring Fischer-Tropsch products quickly and precisely, reaction parameters can be optimized in real time and fluctuations in the energy supply can be better absorbed. Jonas' work could therefore make a decisive contribution to increasing the efficiency of the overall process.

ELEKTRA project takes second place in the “IGF Project of the Year 2025” competition

Our ELEKTRA research project was awarded second place at the “IGF Project of the Year 2025” award ceremony. The prize, which was awarded for the first time by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) funding program, recognizes particularly innovative and practically relevant research projects within the framework of Industrial Collective Research (IGF).

With ELEKTRA - an electrodynamic antifouling coating for maritime applications - we and our project partners are making an important contribution to environmentally friendly biofouling prevention in the maritime sector. The system completely dispenses with biocidal agents and instead uses an alternating electric field to effectively prevent the fouling of ship hulls, in particular sensors or windows. ELEKTRA thus represents a forward-looking, sustainable and cost-effective alternative to conventional solutions based on UV radiation or wiper systems, which usually require structural adaptations.

The award was presented on March 27, 2025 as part of the IGF Congress in Berlin. The three finalists, who were selected by the IGF science council, were presented in short videos (link to video). At the end, the audience was able to decide which project would now bear the title “IGF Project of the Year 2025”. Dr. Michael Baune was there on behalf of CVT to accept the excellent second place.

We would like to thank all our project partners at Fraunhofer IFAM and TU Dresden as well as the BMWE for their support as part of the IGF funding. Second place is not only a recognition for us, but also an incentive to continue our work on innovative and sustainable solutions.

On this year's "Future Day", two pupils from Bremen had the opportunity to get a taste of real laboratory work - in the truest sense of the word. As part of an exciting hands-on project, they were able to lend a hand in the laboratories of the Chemical Process Engineering (CVT) working group and extract the essential oil from orange peel using steam distillation.

Under expert guidance, the young people not only learned about the structure of the distillation apparatus, but also the chemical background to the process. Particularly impressive: the moment when the first drops of fresh orange oil became visible - and the whole laboratory was enveloped in a fruity, citrusy scent.

With activities like this, CVT shows how practical and fascinating process engineering can be - and at the same time awakens an interest in scientific careers at an early age.

As part of a two-week Bachelor's project, two process engineering students have impressively demonstrated how scientific theory and practical application can be combined. Their topic: the extraction of natural ingredients using classic process engineering.

Using steam distillation, the two students first isolated essential oils from lavender flowers and orange peel. While the orange oil impressed with its fresh scent, they used the lavender oil for another exciting step: the production of their own soap - a successful example of the combination of chemistry, creativity and sustainability.

In addition to distillation, the students also worked with the Soxhlet extraction principle to obtain wax from cotton - a complex but effective process that shows how valuable substances can be extracted from natural materials.

The project not only offered the opportunity to learn about different extraction processes, but also to manufacture products with real-life relevance.

After several years of scientific work, Jasper took dielectrophoretic seperators to a new level within the priority program SPP 2045 founded by the DFG.

DEP Project successfully completed: In 2016, the German Science Foundation funded a priority program SPP 2045 “MehrDimPart—highly specific multidimensional fractionation of fine particles with technical relevance” that aims to develop new or enhance existing approaches for the separation of nano- and micrometer-sized particles. Dielectrophoretic separators achieve highly selective separations of (bio-)particles in microfluidic devices or can handle large quantities when non-selective separation is sufficient. Recently, separator designs were developed that aim to combine a high throughput and high selectivity. Here, we summarize the development from a microfluidic fast chromatographic separation via frequency modulated dielectrophoretic particle chromatography (DPC) toward a macrofluidic high throughput separation. Further, we provide a starting point for future work by providing new experimental data demonstrating for the first time the trapping of 200 nm polystyrene particles in a dielectrophoretic high-throughput separator that uses printed circuit boards as alternatives for expensive electrode arrays.

The final publication can be found here.

In his thesis, he focused on dielectrophoretic particle separation and managed to significantly increase the throughput in such filters with completely redesigned setups. Dielectrophoresis (DEP) can be used to separate particles in suspensions, which is possible due to different polarizations. His work can make an important contribution to ensuring that DEP can be used on a larger scale in the future and that valuable raw materials can be recycled from waste; an important building block for a functioning circular economy.

As a result of his groundbreaking work, it is now possible to measure three-dimensionally resolved temperatures within a methane-containing gas phase, and this method can also be extended to other species. These successes are so groundbreaking because they make it possible to detect local temperature hotspots in reactors without having to intervene in the reactor (non-invasive method). This lays the foundation for better understanding and optimizing the processes within reactors in the future. Congratulations on this success!

The project is supervised by Ingmar (CVT), Fabio La Mantia (ESECS) and Alexander Fuchs (Bosch). Passive films play an important role in many applications as construction work, electric devices or electrocatalysts. A comprehensive model of passive film growth, properties and possible breakdon can safe countless hours in the lab and make future products more reliable. The current project is based on works of Ingmar Bösing, Jorg Thöming and Fabio La Mantia, the project meeting at 31.07 in Bremen was the first in person meeting of all participants.

In numerous of studies, dielectrophoresis (DEP) has proven that its high selectivity and versatility make it a promising separation technique in a variety of fields. So far, however, only a few processes in the bioanalytics have made it to commercial use. One of the main challenges is to achieve a technically relevant throughput while maintaining a high selectivity. In one recent publication we present a novel approach of a mesh-based DEP filter with ordered field disturbing structures that has a high potential for upscaling because low-cost and commercially available materials are used.
The UFT is very happy to welcome Richard G. Compton, Professor of Chemistry and Aldrichian Praelector at Oxford University. Richard has made numerous pioneering contributions to electrochemistry. He will talk about "New insights into nanoparticles".

Richard's talk will be in UFT 1790 on Friday, 26 October, 2 pm c.t.

His talk will cover nanoparticle detection with a focus on particle agglomeration. A highlight of his research is the detection of nanoparticles through the quantification of single impact events using microelectrodes. Another focus will be the mechanisms of toxic action of nanoparticles. By developing new electrochemical measurement techniques, it is hoped that the mechanism of action can be better understood, along with possible environmental implications.

In this paper we investigate DEP filtration in microchannels (using simulations and experiments) to find design rules. We can transfer these design rules on real DEP filtration in macroscopic alumina foams. Potential applications are scrap recovery or the separation of CTC from whole blood.

Congrats to Georg and Malte!
https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-018-28735-w
Boukany group

From the abstract:
Dielectrophoresis (DEP) is a versatile technique for the solution of difficult (bio-)particle separation tasks based on size and material. Particle motion by DEP requires a highly inhomogeneous electric field. Thus, the throughput of classical DEP devices is limited by restrictions on the channel size to achieve large enough gradients. Here, we investigate dielectrophoretic filtration, in which channel size and separation performance are decoupled because particles are trapped at induced field maxima in a porous separation matrix. By simulating microfluidic model porous media, we derive design rules for DEP filters and verify them using model particles (polystyrene) and biological cells (S. cerevisiae, yeast). Further, we bridge the throughput gap by separating yeast in an alumina sponge and show that the design rules are equally applicable in real porous media at high throughput. While maintaining almost 100% efficiency, we process up to 9 mL min−1, several orders of magnitude more than most state-of-the-art DEP applications. Our microfluidic approach provides new insight into trapping dynamics in porous media, which even can be applied in real sponges. These results pave the way toward high-throughput retention, which is capable of solving existing problems such as cell separation in liquid biopsy or precious metal recovery.
