The Data Science Center took part in the University of Bremen’s OPEN CAMPUS 2026 with an interactive booth at the MZH. At the Data Wheel of Fortune, visitors could test their knowledge of data, AI, and data science, and win small prizes.

On June 13, the University of Bremen opened its doors to visitors from the university, the city, and the region, as part of the OPEN CAMPUS 2026. This year, the day was held under the motto “Open Worlds – Share Knowledge”. At more than 40 information booths, interested visitors could learn about study programs, research, training, and career opportunities. The Data Science Center (DSC) was also represented with a station in the MZH.

Central to the DSC’s booth was an interactive Data Wheel of Fortune. Visitors could answer questions from different categories to put their knowledge of data science, data management, and artificial intelligence (AI) to the test in a playful manner. The questions ranged from AI in everyday life to so-called “Data Scary Stories”, in which participants had to identify common mistakes in handling data.

Promoting Data Competencies in a Playful Way

The goal of the format was to make data-related topics accessible to a wide range of audiences in a low-barrier manner. Next to adults, younger visitors could also take a spin. The Data Wheel of Fortune was part of the Children’s Campus and the Explorer Passport.

In line with the motto “Insights Grow from Data”, visitors could win small prizes –including nasturtium seeds. Hence, the DSC’s booth combined playful learning with opportunities for discussions and a tangible image of how new knowledge can sprout from data.

Conversations about Data Science, AI, and Research Data

At the booth, the DSC team provided information about their work, consultation and training services, as well as topics such as data science, AI, and research data management. The open format offered many opportunities to engage in conversation with visitors: What exactly is data science? Where do we encounter AI in our daily lives? Why is it important to approach data critically?

OPEN CAMPUS 2026 once again demonstrated how important it is to have formats that convey research and data literacy in a way that is understandable, interactive, and closely aligned with the public’s questions. For the DSC, taking part in the event was a great opportunity to make data-related topics visible and engage in dialogue with a variety of people.
