The DiscussDataLab is a three-day interdisciplinary workshop that is going to take place from August 25 to 27 at the Research Center for East European Studies at the University of Bremen. The event is organized by the research data repository Discuss Data. The interactive open-access platform, with a regional focus on the post-Soviet region, enables researchers worldwide to publicly share, archive, and cite their data. By exchanging feedback and assigning DOIs to all published data sets, the platform contributes to improving data quality.
The first DiscussDataLab will be centred around the topic “Challenges of Data Collection, Re-use, and Analysis: Public Opinion, Political Debates, and Protests in the Context of the Russo-Ukrainian War.” The event is aimed at social scientists from Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and Central Asia, as well as early-career scientists conducting research on these regions.
The DiscussDataLab aims to teach participants (doctoral candidates, postdocs, and master's students in the final phase of their studies) the theoretical and practical basics of RDM. The theoretical part of the workshop will be taught by renowned scientists who research the mentioned regions and will provide insights into their data science methods and data sets. Under the guidance of the Discuss Data team and several curators, participants will then learn to prepare their own research data in practical workshop sessions.
The goal is to enable participants to publish their datasets on the Discuss Data platform or other repositories in accordance with the FAIR principles. By teaching data management skills to early-career researchers, the event aims to promote the sustainable adoption of good scientific practice in handling research data.
