With the widespread use and growing reach of digital content, the field of content moderation is more relevant today than ever before. Effective review and management of such content are thus essential to protect users in the long term. At the same time, moderation guidelines are being loosened, moderation efforts are being scaled back, and existing services like Perspective API are being discontinued. Yet the implications of inadequate moderation are already known from data-driven studies – and range from psychological consequences for those affected to actual acts of violence in the real world.
In light of these developments, an interdisciplinary team of scientists designed the workshop “MI-WS102: Human-Centered Moderation Expertise, Context and Evaluation”, which will take place on the 30th of August 2026 at the “Mensch und Computer” conference in Duisburg. Central topics of the workshop include the development of language and context in relation to hate speech, datasets and benchmarks for AI, as well as the integration of human expertise and moderation work.
A panel comprising representatives from science, NGOs, and content moderations will ensure a comprehensive exchange of knowledge. Therein, the panellists will examine current developments, data-driven research methods and existing gaps in research. All workshop findings will be transparently documented afterward and published openly in the form of conference proceedings, a joint policy paper, and a curated summary of the key conclusions.
Beyond the professional exchange, the workshop creates space for interdisciplinary networking. Participants can consolidate resources, plan joint projects, and establish sustainable structures for future activities. This lays the foundation for long term cooperation in content moderation. At the same time, the event strengthens the actively growing community of scientists, practitioners and moderators in the German-speaking realm – thereby ensuring a sustained dialogue about the future of data-driven research in content moderation.
