Data Science Center

The Interdisciplinary Institute at the University of Bremen Bremen for Data-Driven Research

The Data Science Center (DSC) coordinates and advances the University of Bremen’s data-related expertise and activities. It promotes interdisciplinary collaboration, strengthens researchers’ data literacy, and supports sustainable, data-based research across allscientific fields.

The DSC also serves as a central point of contact, providing services in data management and data science. In addition, the DSC collaborates on data-based research projects, bringing its data expertise to research teams as a project partner.

The DSC supports the Development of a SQL-Based Data Science Infrastructure for Digital Humanities

The funded project examines how African and Afrodescendant people in Romance-speaking Europe engage with digital platforms to articulate narratives and build diasporic identities. The SQL database system will support the documentation and analysis of Afrodiasporic online presences.

Data Journalist Starts Residence Fellowship at the DataNord Project

As part of the DSC's DataNord subproject, Serafin Arhelger will be working as a data journalist in residence over the coming months to share practical skills in communicating data-based research and to promote exchange between researchers and data journalists.

Data Skills for Space Science: DSC Supports Summer School

At the PIP Summer School, the DSC introduced FAIR data principles as part of its DataNord activities. Through an interactive LEGO® workshop, Sarah Büker and Annika Nolte demonstrated how data skills can be taught early on in a practical and engaging way.

DSC hosts 3rd Data-Science-Community Workshop at the INFORMATIK 2025

Together with the Digital Science Center of Kiel University, the DSC once again hosted the Community Workshop at the INFORMATIK Festival 2025 on September 16. The event aims to foster interdisciplinary exchange and sustainable networking among data science initiatives across Germany.


New Publication in NomosHandbuch Hochschulforschung

The newly published NomosHanduch includes a chapter by Dr. Susanne de Vogel entitled “Prä-Docs und Promotion”. The structural challenges discussed in the publication also provide an important context for the work carried out at the DSC and within the DataNord project.


Starting Early, Making an Impact: DSC Supports Data Skills at ICYMARE 2025

At the international early-career conference ICYMARE 2025, the DSC supported young marine researchers through expert inputs, dedicated exchange formats, and targeted data skills development — from a keynote to the newly introduced Data Corner.

DSC Supports the Implementation of the ICYMARE 2025

The marine science conference is aimed specifically at young marine researchers and offers participants the opportunity to gain conference experience while learning about recent re-search findings. The DSC Seed Grant was awarded to fund a poster session as well as several workshops.

DSC Supports the Organisation of the First “DiscussDataLab” Workshop

The workshop aims to bring together social scientists to teach them the basics of research data management (RDM). The goal is to support participants in publishing their research data according to FAIR principles.


DSC Supports PACE Challenge 2025

Organized by DSC member Prof. Dr. Sebastian Siebertz, the PACE Challenge brought together teams from around the world to tackle two particularly challenging computational problems. The DSC provided the technical infrastructure that ensured fair and reliable conditions for all participants.
