Linguistics deals with the scientific study of human language in all its forms and applications. The aim of this discipline is to understand and explain the general principles according to which languages are structured, vary, change and are learnt by their speakers and used in communication.

The Linguistics/Language Sciences degree programme offers you the opportunity to engage with language and linguistics in all its forms and functions, both with the theoretical and empirical foundations and with its numerous applications in science and beyond. During your studies, you will deal with the analysis and evaluation of linguistic data, data collection and organisation, the structural, social and temporal-spatial diversity and unity of human language(s) as well as the use of language in (intercultural) oral and written communication. How the knowledge of language and language use acquired in this way can be successfully used in non-academic professional fields will also be addressed.

Maltese

A special feature in Bremen is the Malta Centre, the world's only academic institution (outside Malta) dedicated to research and teaching the Maltese language. The Malta Centre is home to the largest library with texts in Maltese (outside Malta) and is assigned to linguistics and regularly offers modules that are to be used, for example, in the MA LS for the competence area (V) Language Competence.

Bremen is also home to the Għaqda Internazzjonali tal-Lingwistika Maltija / International Association of Maltese Linguistics (Għilm), which organises international conferences every two years at different locations with lively participation from students from Bremen (e.g. 2007 in Bremen, 2011 at the University of Malta).e.g. 2007 in Bremen, 2011 in Malta, 2013 in Lyon, 2015 in Turin, 2017 in Bratislava and 2019 in Kakau). Several theses on topics of Maltese linguistics have already been successfully completed at both BA and MA level in Bremen.

In close cooperation with the Università ta' Malta, student excursions, work shadowing, internships and field research are organised in Malta.
