Discrete Optimizion is a powerful field that is both influenced by mathematical theory and by direct real-world applications. Typically, the definition of a specific mathematical optimization problem is well motivated and insprired by practial optimization tasks. Nevertheless, theoretical models can usually only capture parts of the original problem characteristics. State-of-the-art research in discrete optimization generally aims for efficient optimization techniques with provable bounds on the solution quality for models that are as realistic as possible.

This talk covers different practically motivated challenges in discrete optimization. We will consider optimization methods for uncertainties in the underlying data, solution concepts for systems without a central authority, and models where decisions have to be fixed without complete knowledge of the problem. A special focus will be on Daniel Schmand's research in the field.
