SFB Prozessignatur

Outline:

The project is a part of the Transregional Collaborative Research Centre SFB/TRR 136 in the Universities of Bremen, RWTH Aachen and Oklahoma State University, Stillwater (USA). The subproject entitled ‘’In situ measurement of mechanical and thermal material loads’’ aims to measure material deformation and temperature changes during manufacturing processes with very high resolution. The measurement will be done using material integrated thin-film sensors that will be fabricated in IMSAS.

Aim:

The basic aim of the project is sensor-integration in steel to characterize manufacturing processes. For this, thin-film sensors will be embedded in steel to produce ‘sensorial steel’ through which force and temperature measurements can be taken during a machining process. For the integration of sensors, thin-films of different metals will be deposited on steel wafers to form resistive structures in the shape of meanders. The resistive structures will be mechanically and thermally isolated to protect them against the harsh environment of the manufacturing processes and the embedding will be completed by soldering the sensor-integrated steel with a steel workpiece.

Description:

The Transregional Collaborative Research Centre SFB/TRR 136 was established in three different Universities namely University of Bremen, RWTH Aachen and Oklahoma State University, Stillwater (USA). It is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft” DFG (German National Science Foundation) for an initial period of three years from April 2014 until December 2017. It is an interdisciplinary research center and currently employs more than 40 engineers, mathematicians, and natural scientists who together aim at developing and specifying the concept of process signatures to initiate a paradigm shift on material-oriented manufacturing. Professor Ekkard Brinksmeier, from the hosting university, University of Bremen, is the initiator and spokesperson and the co-spokesperson is Professor Fritz Klocke from RWTH Aachen. Within the SFB is the subproject C04: In situ measurement of mechanical and thermal material loads. The measurement will be based on sensor integrated measurements and on optical measurement procedures. The project leaders are Professor Walter Lang and Professor Gert Goch.
