Ph.D. project: Harbinger of Britain's Post-Boom Transformation? The Decline of Glasgow's Shipbuilding Industry and the Outcomes of Associated Social Policy
Cedric Meyer is a doctoral researcher in Project B15 “Under Global Shock: Outcomes of Different Social Protection Programs United Kingdom, Chile, and Germany, 1970–2000” within the Collaborative Research Center 1342 “Global Dynamics of Social Policy”.
His doctoral project examines the impact of social policies adapted to mitigate the conseguences of the crisis of Glasgow's shipbuilding industry. A distinctive feature of this case is that the Scottish shipbuilding industry ran into difficulties earlier than many other industrial sectors in Great Britain and Western Europe. Accordingly, the research will focus on the extent to which certain social policy developments, which are otherwise primarily associated with the Thatcher era, were already emerging here in advance.
