The&nbsp;timeframe under investigation&nbsp;ranges from the Belle Époque of globalisation prior to 1914, to the time of deglobalisation in the age of the world wars and the Great Depression, to the second wave of economic globalisation that began in the 1950s and which has gained a new quality and dynamic since the 1980s. <a class="externalLink" href="https://www.socialpolicydynamics.de/projects/project-area-b-transregional-dynamics/project-b11-2022-25-/en/" target="_blank" title="Opens external link in new window">For further information, please see the CRC 1342 project page.</a> &nbsp; </td> </tr> <tr> <td> <a href="about:blank" target="_blank">Refugee Migration and Civil Society Solidarity in the Welfare State</a> with <a href="about:blank" target="_blank">Dietmar Süss</a> (University of Augsburg) 2019–2021 (1.5 years) Third-party funding: Volkswagen Foundation Does mass migration by refugees and other immigrants pose a threat to the solidarity underlying the welfare state? Against the backdrop of the crisis discourse prevailing in the current debate, we consider the issue of what welfare-state solidarity means, its extent and to whom it applies to be an open question that can only be answered in its historical context. The project seeks to explain from the perspective of contemporary history how the Federal German welfare state and its basic understanding of solidarity has changed in view of different migration movements from the late 1970s to the present day. Special focus is placed on how this sphere has been shaped by civil society actors and independent welfare associations. Our thesis claims that it was these civil society actors that sought to submit the idea of social welfare solidarity to a new, transnational re-interpretation running counter to the widespread rhetoric of a welfare state in crisis. What makes the project original is that it challenges the dominating welfare state research in the fields of political and social science: by adopting a perspective firmly rooted in the fields of history and cultural studies; by investigating the innovative potential of civil society actors in the transformation process of the order of the welfare state; and by combining praxeological and discourse-theoretical approaches.
