Summary
Testing for impermeability and detection of leaks plays an important role in the construction and installation of Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems and other kinds of equipment. In cooperation with the company ZILA GmbH from Suhl, IMSAS develops a sensor module which can be used for testing HVAC systems and gas pipe systems for leaks.
Description
While energy efficiency and cost saving are essential to be optimized in HVAC equipment, for gas pipe systems safety has priority. Therefore, leak tests are mandatory in many branches of industry regulated by specific laws and standards.
In cooperation with the company ZILA GmbH IMSAS works on the development of a modular sensor system. With the help of adaptor modules, this system can be applied for dual use, for leak tests and for equipment usability tests, thereby achieving cost savings by economy of scale.
The project focuses on two measurement methods: one for leak tests in ventilation shafts, the other one for usability tests of gas or liquid pipe systems. The idea is to integrate the thermal flow sensor developed at IMSAS together with a pressure sensor in a MID-package. With the help of an adaptor module it will be possible to connect the system to the equipment under test.
A fan is controlled so as to create an increased pressure in the system under test, using pressure sensor data for feedback. The flow sensor will then measure the amount of air flow necessary to maintain the increased pressure. This yields information about the rate of leakage.
