People with a migration history often face barrieres when they when seeking trustworthy information about their cancer treatment. To develop improved health information resources for this population, the IPP and the University Medical Centre Halle are working together on the 'DivO-Inform' project.

The “DivO-Inform” project aims to specifically improve the health care conditions for people with a migration history in Germany. Patients with a migration history and their relatives often face barriers ingaining access to relevant and important information and services due to language and cultural barriers. The project focusses on oncological care, which means the care of patients undergoing cancer treatment. Professor Birte Berger-Höger from the Institute for Public Health and Nursing Research at the University of Bremen explains the aim of the DivO-Inform project: “Our focus is on developing and testing a concept for the development and dissemination of diversity-friendly health information that meets the specific needs and preferences of people with a migration history. We see this as an important measure to improve health care, particularly in the area of supportive therapies in oncology, which play an important role in the care of cancer patients.” Supportive therapy includes procedures that aim to reduce the acute and late effects of cancer and its treatment. In addition to drug therapies against side effects, the treatment methods include psychological care, nutritional concepts and exercise programs. The project also aims to develop diversity-friendly health information, available in different languages and formats, to ensure that it is easily accessible and adequately addresses patient needs and preferences. Project leader Professor Anke Steckelberg from Halle University Medicine explains: "Our aim is to improve health care for people with a migration history in oncology by specifically addressing their needs and preferences. By developing diversity-friendly health information, we want to ensure that this population group has access to the information and resources they needs to make informed decisions about their health."
Collaboration with the Charité and migration organizations
The “DivO-Inform” project is carried out in close collaboration with Professor Julia Lühnen from the Charité Berlin and the State Network of Migrant Organizations Saxony-Anhalt (LAMSA e.V.). Mamad Mohamad from LAMSA e.V. emphasizes: “Ensuring comprehensive health care for all population groups is of crucial importance. Through our project we can help ensure that the needs, challenges and preferences of people with a migration history are appropriately taken into account. The provision of health information must be effective and accessible to ensure that language barriers do not limit participation in healthcare." The project runs until June 30, 2025 and is funded by the German Cancer Aid.

(Christina Selzer, press release from the University of Bremen from March 10, 2024)

Additional Information:
www.uni-bremen.de/institut-fuer-public-health-und-pflegeforschung

Contact:
Prof. Dr. phil.
The 4th International Conference of the German Society for Nursing Science (DGP) in Berlin provided an opportunity to discuss the latest research findings and innovative practical examples and to form potential collaborations.

Researchers from the Institute of Public Health and Nursing Research (IPP) at the University of Bremen were strongly represented at the 4th International Conference of the German Society for Nursing Science (DGP), held on May 8 and 9, 2025, in Berlin. Under the conference theme “Nursing Research: Are we keeping up?”, the departments of Health Care Research and Evaluation and Implementation Research in Nursing Sciencepresented current research findings on topics such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), school nursing, and preventive home visits. The work of the IPP researchers underscores the institute’s leading role in nursing science and its commitment to innovative approaches in research and practice.

Dr. Kathrin Seibert opened the symposium “Artificial Intelligence in Nursing Care – Perspectives on Repositories and AI Systems” with a keynote on the use of AI in nursing care and moderated subsequent contributions from research projects within the BMBF funding program Making Repositories and AI Systems Usable in Everyday Nursing Practice. She also presented a tool for assessing AI readiness in nursing-related research and development projects. The AI Nursing Care Readiness Assessment (AINCRA) was developed under the leadership of the University of Bremen in collaboration with the Institute of Computer Science (IMI) at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, the Berlin University of Applied Sciences, the Association for Digitalization in Social Services (vediso e.V.), and the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society.

Dominik Domhoff shared experiences and recommendations for successful collaboration between scientific accompanying research and AI nursing care projects. These insights are based on several years of accompanying research on AI nursing care projects and offer valuable input for future research in funding programs related to the use of AI in nursing.

The workshop “Barcamp AI in Nursing Care in Action: A Workshop for Open-Minded Collaboration” was jointly conducted by Dr. Kathrin Seibert, Dominik Domhoff, Alessia Nowak (IMI), and Janissa Altona. Participants engaged in hands-on use of the Barcamp method and discussed the integration of AI into nursing care in four parallel sessions.

Jana Kaden presented a poster titled “Theories, models and frameworks of school nursing – results of a scoping review.” The work explored the extent to which school nursing approaches in Germany align with existing theoretical concepts. The findings highlight the potential benefits of using internationally established models and frameworks to guide the daily practice of school nurses and to support the further development and implementation of school nursing in Germany.

Ellen Dunker presented the results of her research on preventive home visits in a talk titled “For whom, why and under which conditions do preventive home visits for the older population work? A realist review.” She used the realist review method to develop an initial program theory (iPT) for preventive home visits based on existing literature. The findings demonstrate that various factors can enhance the success of such visits. Considering these factors in the design and implementation of future preventive home visit interventions could improve their effectiveness. The work is part of a dissertation in the Research Cluster ‘Healthy City of Bremen’ and is being supervised by Prof. Dr. Birte Berger-Höger (University of Bremen), Prof. Dr. Claudia Stolle-Wahl (City University of Applied Sciences, Bremen) and Prof. Dr. Michael Rosentreter (Cooperative University of Applied Sciences Hamburg (BHH), Hamburg) as part of a cross-university collaboration.

Ensuring the quality of doctorates, providing doctoral candidates with targeted support, offering them a good framework for their doctorate: these are some of the goals that the structured doctoral programme in Health Sciences will be pursuing from 1 October 2025.

Supervisors and the programme coordinators met on 11.06.2025 to kick off the programme. All professors at the Institute of Public Health and Nursing Research IPP are represented in the group of supervisors. The spokesperson for the new doctoral programme is Prof. Dr. Ansgar Gerhardus, Head of the Department of Health Services Research at the IPP, the deputy spokesperson is Prof. Dr. Birte Berger-Höger, Head of the Department of Evaluation and Implementation in Nursing Sciences at the IPP.The structured doctoral programme in health sciences has been recognised by the University of Bremen and will form an umbrella for all doctoral students in the high-profile area Health Sciences (WSP). At its core is a qualification programme, which was finally discussed at the kick-off meeting and which is based on three pillars: structured supervision, a further education and training programme as well as independent activities and networking for doctoral students.

Overall, the programme is characterised by a high degree of flexibility in order to take into account the individual needs of the doctoral candidates, to provide them with the best possible support in their doctoral project and to prepare them for their future career - regardless of whether this is within or outside academia. "We have designed the programme in such a way that it offers significant added value for both the doctoral candidates and their supervisors. It not only helps to improve the qualifications of doctoral students, but can also eases the workload supervisors through joint supervision and the courses on offer," explains spokesperson Prof. Dr. Ansgar Gerhardus. "We look forward to welcoming doctoral students from various disciplines to our programme starting in October and to working with them and the participating colleagues to create this new and important offer in the health sciences," says deputy spokesperson Prof Dr Birte Berger-Höger.

In the coming weeks, coordinator Fabienne Schnepf will publish further information on the WSP website. Interested doctoral students from the health sciences who are at the beginning of their doctorate or would like to start a doctorate in the near future can contact Fabienne Schnepf for further information in consultation with their supervisors.

Further information:

Fabienne Schnepf, Coordinator of the Doctoral Programme in Health Sciences

fschnepf@uni-bremen.de

www.healthsciences.uni-bremen.de/promotion.html

This question was addressed in an interdisciplinary workshop as part of the DivO-Inform project funded by the German Cancer Aid, organised by the Department of Nursing Evaluation and Implementation Research at the IPP of the University of Bremen, among others.

The workshop in Magdeburg on 25.06.2025 was organised by the IPP, Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin and the Saxony-Anhalt State Network of Migrant Organisations (LAMSA). Those affected, relatives, language mediators, multipliers, medical and nursing professionals, representatives of health insurance companies and cancer organisations were invited. Together, they discussed existing information needs, barriers in the healthcare system and possible strategies for improving care for people with a history of migration and cancer.

Together, they discussed existing information needs, barriers within the healthcare system and possible strategies to improve care for people with a migrant background and cancer.

Two keynote presentations by the project team provided insight into current research findings and practical challenges. The first presentation addressed the results of an interview study on the information needs of people with a migrant background and cancer, as well as structural barriers within the German healthcare system. The second presentation focused on the role of language mediation as a key element for successful communication between patients and healthcare professionals.

Following the presentations, participants engaged in moderated small group discussions on key topics such as language, communication, access to information and the cultural specificity of health information. It became clear that the linguistic and content-related complexity of medical treatments often complicates communication. Due to time constraints, there is often too little opportunity to ensure that patients fully understand the information provided. Raising awareness among healthcare professionals about assessing and promoting health literacy was identified as an important step. At the same time, participants expressed the wish for more transparent and comprehensible decision-making processes during the course of treatment.

Initial solution ideas were also discussed during the event. The results will feed into the development of a guideline for creators of health information and an implementation concept for providing health information for people with a migrant background and cancer.

The event clearly demonstrated how valuable direct exchange between affected individuals and interest holders is in fostering mutual understanding and better addressing the needs of the target group.
