Description
The SAVE & SAFE project is an innovative initiative to improve care for geriatric patients with a history of falls and to reduce the workload of nursing staff. The use of modern technologies, in particular an AI-supported digital assistance system for preventive fall prevention, aims to increase patient safety and improve the quality of care in the long term.
The project will be implemented from 2024 to 2027 at several locations, including the acute geriatric departments of the participating clinics in Krefeld, Düsseldorf and Bonn. The intervention phase will start in autumn 2025, followed by a comprehensive evaluation.
A central component of the project is an AI-based assistance system that uses sensors to detect critical events in patient rooms and semi-automatically documents mobility-related data. In addition, a specialised nurse will be established as a ‘fall prevention professional’ to coordinate fall-related tasks, relieve the burden on inpatient nursing staff and accompany preventive measures beyond the hospital stay.
In parallel with the technical and organisational intervention, data on workload, psychosocial stress and perceptions of job satisfaction among nursing staff are being collected. This survey provides important insights into the effects of the new form of care on stress, strain and job satisfaction in everyday clinical practice. Scientific management and evaluation are the responsibility of the Institute for Public Health and Nursing Research (IPP) at the University of Bremen under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Karin Wolf-Ostermann.
Statistics show that almost half of people over the age of 80 fall at least once a year, which often leads to mobility restrictions, fear of falling and an increased need for care. SAVE & SAFE aims to address this problem in an evidence-based manner through preventive technologies, optimised work processes and interdisciplinary collaboration. This benefits both patients, who are protected from subsequent falls and fear of falling, and nursing staff, who benefit from reduced workloads and more efficient processes.
With funding of €5.1 million, SAVE & SAFE is making an important contribution to improving care and working conditions in geriatrics.
