The network promotes interdisciplinary collaboration, the transfer of scientific knowledge and strengthens the integration of ethical reflection into policy, healthcare practice, and professional roles within the health sector. The importance of ethical reflection in public health has come to the forefront of scientific attention and public awareness, not least due to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Social epidemiological data on the links between social and health inequalities require greater consideration of the ethical implications of public health interventions. Whilst the field of public health ethics (PHE) is highly developed internationally, in Germany it still lacks systematic networking in practice, as well as established theoretical frameworks or fixed structures for policy advice. At the level of experienced researchers, there is a cross-disciplinary working group on public health ethics (www.public-health-ethik.de), however, the subject is not systematically integrated into the curricula for Master’s, PhD students and also researchers in early career phases. The Network for Public Health Ethics (Network for PHE) therefore aims to address ethical issues in the healthcare sector more actively and to systematically connect students transitioning to PhD studies with current PhD candidates. Our network specifically targets researchers in early career phases who are either pursuing a PhD in public health and have an interest in ethical issues, or who wish to establish themselves in the field of PHE in the long term.
In addition to fostering connections at both local and national levels, our network is primarily dedicated to promoting interdisciplinary collaboration. The network is also designed to facilitate close contact with experts in this field of research. Furthermore, it aims to facilitate the transfer of knowledge on these relevant topics into practice, with a view to raising awareness among healthcare professionals.
