Ethics Education in Public Health: A Needs Assessment Study
Description
The project investigates the need for ethics education within the German-speaking public health community and aims to provide a solid foundation for its further development. The central questions are which ethical topics should be addressed in undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education; which teaching and learning formats are perceived as particularly effective; what competencies educators and students in public health should possess; and how future educational offerings should be designed.
The study follows a mixed-methods design. In the first phase, approximately ten qualitative, semi-structured expert interviews will be conducted. Participants will include both current and former educators, as well as students (at the bachelor's and master's level) and alumni who are or were actively involved in professional associations or relevant networks. Interview partners will be selected based on their experience and subject-matter expertise.
Following this, an online survey will be conducted to reach as many educators and students from various institutions as possible. The goal is to gain a nuanced understanding of the current needs and expectations regarding ethics education in public health and health sciences degree programs.
The project aims to contribute to the conceptual advancement of ethics education in German-speaking public health and health sciences programs. The findings are intended to support the formulation of practice-oriented recommendations and the systematic development of a curriculum.
The study is being conducted in cooperation with the Public Health Ethics Working Group, a cross-disciplinary initiative of the Academy for Ethics in Medicine (AEM) and the German Society for Public Health (DGPH).
